I am about to buy tires for my 72 K5 4x4 and want to make a good choice.
On it now are General 31x10.50 R15LT M/S about 50% worn.
On my Land Cruiser I got Nittos and have had more flats and ruined tires in a year and a half then in my last 10 years of driving. I have not had it off road but did pick up nails and ruined one with a bolt I ran over.

I was thinking BGF All Terrains or Toyo Open Country ATII's.
I am open to other options but I dont want to pick a fragile off road tire.
Maybe it has just been bad luck on the Nittos who knows.

I also want them a little taller I would prefer 1-2" taller then what I have now and I think 12.5" wide.

What suggestions do you guys make? I have stock 15" wheels now but might by something 16 or 17" if that would make a better choice.

I am looking for rally style wheels I believe so it keeps a stock appearance.
Thanks PG

I have always had good luck with BFG's on road and off. I ran the pressure up around 38 lbs on 235 75 15's on my first blazer and would get 70 to 80 thousand out of a set.

On the jimmy I have 37" BFG Krawlers and drive it more on road than off, They have been on the rig for 9 years and still have good tread. Getting a little chewed up from wheeling, but I have been impressed.

I am not a big fan of Toyo's as they seem to wear quickly especially once they hit 50% of tread.

I like the look of the General Grabber but I have no experience with them.

If you are sticking with something around 31" I think 17's are a little big for the amount of sidewall, but its a personal preference as to how much profile you want.

I really would like 32" or even better 33" as long as they wont rub.
I dont want to lift it at all really so not rubbing is important.
I think I agree that 15-16" wheels is better so forget the 17" wheel option.
Right now I am leaning towards the BFG as they were great on my
77 FJ40 I sold last month.

Thanks PG

Its REALLY hard to beat the BFG AT/KO's. They just came out with a new version, but on an old rig, i'd see if you can get a set of the old versions still.

The new sidewall is pretty busy.

Other than that, you should be able to get 33's on there if you stick to narrow, and stick to stock rims.

Best of luck!

7 or 8" wide rim and 32x11.5s or 33x12.5s should be ok.

X2 on the BFG ATs. Best all around tire you can buy.

What is the difference between old and new style?

How would I go about finding the old style?

Thanks PG

I'm sure there is more to it than this, but from an appearance standpoint, the sidewalls are more aggressive on the new one.

Just call around . All the shops around here can still get the KO's in addition to hte KO2's.

Looks like the new BFG's are not available in 15" sizes.

82355 I found some but I bet they are old style have not picked them up yet.
Can you confirm this 100%? Makes me think switching to 16 or 17" might be a good idea. PG

Nothing wrong with the old ones. I'd run those, and deal with it on the next set.

Truthfully, on an older truck, i think the old sidewall ones will look better.

Plus, your next set it a ways off. On a heavy 3/4 ton suburban, i see at least 35 or 40k on a set of these tires, with lots of hard highway miles on the truck.

So in the spirit of what I read when I click on a post and to answer the title question. Swamper sx is about the toughest tire you can buy. Course they are only roundish. So not so awesome on the road

Add another solid vote for the KO's. I've run 'em on everything I've got/had since 1995.

In all that time I've had one flat in Baja on The Goat Trail near Valle Trinidad - that's it. No tire would have survived that particular puncture hazard...

Absolutely agree. It's the first tire I would think of for a dedicated hardcore crawler, as long as it's a trailer queen.
