So I got a 30K strap 25' long, and a 5" tree saver strap.
My SIL decides to use them to remove a stump and ends up looping them end to end, and pulling them so tight they have bonded themselves together. I cut the ends off them, and wondered who can resew the ends to a loop again?

Are there any riggers in your area? If so, give them a call. They'd know who can do it.

Only one I know of off hand around here is Dakota riggers.

I would be making my SIL buy me a couple new straps and then give her the ones she focked up to keep and use however she pleases from now on. :deal:

Kert...riggers, like boating type stuff, or saftey stuff?

and Scott, that was my SonInLaw....he did offer to buy a new one, but I said let me see if I could get this one apart....I think the friction was great enough it actually bonded itself together in the knot. Anyway I couldn't even get a screwdriver in between them to start to pry them apart.

Riggers as in machine movers. They are or at least should be equipped to lift most things and haul them which takes a vairety of straps, slings and the like. Usually they'll know where to get them repaired properly.

slings, ok, we got them here at work, I'll ask some of the shop guys if they ever need them repaired.

I dont believe they repair any of them, all messed up or frayed lifting straps or slings are taken out of service and destroyed. its an osha rule. I'd buy new. they're cheap enough and you'll trust them more

I used to haul oversized loads and equipment, anytime a strap was damaged, stretched, frayed, torn, or got soft like a cotton material it went into the garbage!!! I've seen straps break too many times and people get hurt or equipment damaged to take the risk!!! Also be aware that straps get damaged by UV rays, so store them in a dry spot out of the sunlight!!! I've never heard of anyone repairing them, they had a limited life span since we used them everyday and they would simply wear out... I've seen the melting you describe, and if the DOT officer saw that on a strap we used on a load they would hit us with an "Unsecured load" citation in a heartbeat. That's the weak point that could break under load...

are we talking frayed, damaged, UV damage, all messed up or the ends cut off?

The two are totally different. Every strap starts with a cut off end or two.

All of the above. I have 18 yrs experience in the construction trade and I have never heard of anyone repairing a strap.
As a matter of fact I got my 30' x 5" wide strap from a crane operator who said he had to throw it away because it was faded a little bit.
He wouldn't even hand it to me, He said I could get it out of the dumpster.
He did me a favor and didn't cut it into pieces like he was supposed to.

I bet if you do find someone to repair it properly it would probably cost about the same as a new one. Not to mention the piece of mind you would have not worrying about repaired stitches.

IMHO buy a new strap, make the SNL change your oil & mow the lawn or whatever fits the bill.

yeah, we got a little off track here, both of these are in VERY good condition, have been kept in my recovery tote, and have no fraying, wear, UV damage...nothing wrong with them except they got bound together. The bound up ends have been cut off, and I just want to get them resewn with a loop like before. I think I'll visit a leather upholsterer to see about matching the pattern on the loops.

You might try a good boot repair shop. They sew with heavy duty nylon thread.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, someone who can go through thick leather, a nylon strap should be easy.

We have a canvas shop that will resew straps like that for about 10 bucks a loop.

I have never had it done but they use the same technique as the original strap. Lay it over and sew about 12" of the stuff together then the loop gets made, they can put a canvas protector on it too.

I have a big 4" strap I need to get down there, cut in the middle. Lots of times it would be nice to have a shorter strap than my 30 footer

kinda same subject
does anyone know a place I can send my snatch rope? I've got two.
1) 30' x 1.5
1) 100' x 1.5

I need three eye's spliced. I've been using a Bowen knot with some tape around the end. Plenty strong, but considering putting some nice eyes on the ends.
