Towing. (New questions)

A crew cab in going to look like a fat man in a little coat on an 18' trailer. Luckily I'm sure you're getting one with factory size tires.

We have an 18' trailer but I haven't tried to put the crew cab on it. I've hauled a couple standard cab long beds and there isn't a ton of extra room. I have 37" tires and I always figured it would probably just barely fit with no room to adjust.

6L80...nice! my 12K trailer weighs 3460

I'd take the 12K trailer and tow at capacity over the overloaded trailer. U-haul offers a "W" model tow dolly that is wide enough for a 3/4 ton 2wd truck. They let me rent it for a 1966 C20 but not a 1977 C10...

I tend to agree with this. A bit over capacity on the truck is preferable to overweight on the trailer. Just make sure your tires can handle the additional weight and a weight distribution hitch.

My thoughts on it as a mechanical engineer are that trucks are over engineered where as trailers are not.

Yeah.. the trans is the only part that will suffer some. Due to the 3.42s.

All the other parts of my truck are the same as the 11000 pound rated version version.

When I moved from CO to ID in December of '16, I towed my CCLB (cause it wasn't running yet) on my 18' flatbed trailer behind my 96 K2500 with the 7.4 vortec/4l80e/4.10's. Mind you, both the tow rig and the CCLB were filled to the brim with all of our crap for the move (cabs and beds). So I'm confident in saying that I was exceeding the tow rating of the 96 truck, and by far was exceeding the trailers recommended weight :ignore:

CCLB was right up to the front of the trailer and still hung off the back a few feet, but wasn't horrible for what it was IMO. And we made the drive just fine (over 800 miles). I never went above 70, and most of the time kept it around 65. I still lost two trailer tires, but again, I contribute that to exceeding the trailer weight limits by a lot (dual 3500 lb axles...luckily has brakes on both axles, so stopping was still good). I had a bit of sway on the trip out, but nothing horrible...probably should of had a weight distributing hitch on there too, but didn't.

I want to actually look at the trailer before I reserve it.. but it looks like I'll be doing that tomorrow or Monday.

I think your new truck is going to be fine as far as engine trans as long as you monitor temps. But the brakes on the truck and trailer are areas I’d be checking.. if the trailer is under the 7k mark it prob only has one axle with brakes, if it was me I would opt for the largest trailer you can put behind the truck and be legal.. imho the brakes are the most important thing..
my suburban brakes suck.. it barely will stop the truck with the trailer at capacity where Ethel will stone the trailer with no brakes no prob.. more now with the discs.. I’ve had a couple downhill heart attack moments with the burb, not a big deal with the horse trailer because it has both axles on brakes and it’ll stop the truck if you let it..
go slow be safe and pay attention and don’t be in a hurry..

The brakes on the truck are good for an 11,000# trailer.... And im renting the 12k trailer. It probably has brakes on both axles. I missed today for it, so I'll be reserving the trailer Monday. Only thing I'm not positive about is wether the ramps are stand up or slide ins.... :dunno:. So I may have to grab tools to remove them. I'll ask when I reserve it though.

Still don't know if the ramps are stand ups or not.. but trailers reserved and I picked up a few things I'll need. ... I hope the stuff is good. Cause it's on it's way lol

Wow... I was trying to get a rise out of the wife. So ii mentione that we have one CC with nothing one it, and a new trailers only $3500 for the one ive wanted for a while...

I said it like I was really contemplating it. And her reply instead of "Hell NO!" . Was

"It's your card, do whatever you want with it."...

:eek1::eek::yikes:
She's just lucky I'm not the same as I was when we met lol.. because I'd buy it tomorrow!:D . It's still so tempting it's crazy.
The whole point in getting this crewcab is to DD it, sell my '15 silverado, lose that payment, so that i have the money to buy old or wrecked cars and sell them for profit. Plus buy steel for some other Fab ventures to sell.. So I'll need a trailer lol.

Damn conundrums lol

Trailers are cool because they are possibly money makers if you can reliably tow some stuff around for people.. something to consider

I have a plan for my shop that involves a trailer, and I WILL buy one within the next year or 2.. I need one to haul the rumble bee anyway. But I got that card paid off to buy my shop, and I freaking hate the idea off putting more on it. That's my only problem with buying one lol... On the other hand it Would definitely give me better piece of mind going 18 hrs away with it, and it would lessen my return load by 800# or more with the lighter trailer... Both ways have their own issues for sure..

One thing I have learned is if you are towing something for your business even if you are being paid or not having a solid safe and reliable trailer are paramount... using my example, if I was to show up with a crappy trailer to pick up someone’s rig that is going to tell them something.. good or bad.. if we show up with a appropriate trailer or better and have all the proper tie downs etc to secure the load then the customer is going to be a lot more comfortable with it and you will have less potential for liability if you know the trailer is new and is setup for what you are doing.. it’s the cost of doing business.. we treat customers stuff way better than our own..

people are amazed when they see I have 6 axle straps / corner ratchets / 2 27ft ratchets / 2 J-hook chains / 2 bridals to pick from / pool noodle to cover winch cable for low profile cars front spoilers / and small ratchet straps to hold stuff down / lots of wood blocks / 2 wood planks for low profile car load/unload / 2 5 gal buckets and scooper / snow shovel for big piles of crash cleanup / big broom on headboard . . . all on my rollback tow truck for work .

I think a set of good straps are more than enough.. we have some macs straps and the padded loops for the trailer.
I think you can over do it but that’s to each guy.. whatever makes you feel safe knowing that vehicle is not leaving that trailer.. ever..
