So my 25 year old Dunlop mud rovers have finally found their end. They had some tread but they were getting there.

Last weekend a huge pothole did something bad and now the tire is separating.

It is Saturday and my options are limited here at my father-in-laws.

What do you suggest.

- 33" Toyo MT ($330)
- 33" General X3 MT ($200)
- 31" Cooper AT ($140 or $180 depending which side of town I am on)

I don't drive much and don't drive off-road. I take my kids to the beach mostly.

However, I have never been happy with AT offroad. If I ever had a reason to go off-road I'd like to be able to actually go somewhere (I have a locker and mild lift, previous version of my K5 was on 38s).

If you got this far, let me ruin it. My wife said stop thinking, get the Toyos and come back home and swim with the kids in the pool. The dude here just gave me $10 off and the truck is on the rack right now.

Second guess me.

I run the Generals on all my rides.

I run the Generals

It was a difficult call due to price. Why do the Generals have that sidewall stuff? It is only raised an 1/8" so it is just for show. That was what put me off the Generals.

The online reviews seem positive about General.

The tire guy across town said the Generals have a new tire compound but could not explain much more than that.

If they didn't have the fake side lugs I would have got the Generals. Either have sidelugs or don't have side lugs. Maybe side lugs put me off because it said marketing engineered.

No idea on the side lugs but in10 years and multiple sets, I've only had one flat and it was driver error. I beat on them hard too in the rocks / desert and tow a 30' fifth wheel. I'm on my 2nd set of X3's and love them. They are not real noisy either.

I just had my mits on a set of General new AT and that's what I'm running next. Really improved sidewall strength it looks like on the AT's

If you cant get the cooper's in a 33 or 35 then my votes on toyo

Only 31"

I really wanted to just go with a new set of 32" in either all terrains that had good sidelugs or mud tires like the Dunlop mud rovers I had. Can't be too picky when you have 3 hours on a Saturday afternoon to find a set of tires in a medium sized town.

I bet those side lugs on the generals do more than you think. Any traction on the side is better than none. And being where they are they won't wear off fast either. So they don't need to be as deep.

I've never had generals OR toyos before so I couldn't say which is better. Always wanted some open country's but just never picked a set up.
One tire I can no longer discount is the walmart mastercraft brand. I had a set of mud terrains on my old 4runner. After 25000 miles and a LOT of off road beating they still had 90% tread and weren't torn up.
That thing went every where I pointed it and hit the skinny pedal.

True. My Dunlop had smooth sidewalls. The Generals were basically my Dunlop plus some minimal sidewall pattern.

I was thinking about this time around getting something closer to some DickCepeks I had awhile back. Those sidewalls made all the difference in mud. I wanted a less agressive footprint with a more aggressive sidewall lug.

If those Generals were in 32" or a smaller 31" with more sidewall, I would have got them. Toyos in 31" would have worked.

I found a comparison of Toyo and Generals

https://www.raptorforumz.com/threads/general-tire-grabber-vs-toyo-open-country-m-t.6184/

Edit: I didn't read all three pages of comments, that first page had the most worthless set of comments I could imagine. So glad for CK5!

Nice comparison article I would have poured over before making a spreadsheet to decide which tires -- the DC tires don't have the same degree of sidelugs they had back in the early '90s https://www.treadmagazine.com/buyers-guide/tire-buyers-guide-2017/

Now I need to see what SuperSwamper had. I really didn't want 12.5" wide tires either. More like 10" was it.

Edit II: Given time and or selection, here is what I would have gotten, some 10.5" wide radial Swampers in 32" or 33". At one time I had a set of these in 38" on this K5 and really liked them.

I run the Toyo MT's on my K5 and absolutely love them. Best tire I've ever run IMO. I put a set of the general AT's on my K10 and they aren't bad either. If I hadn't got such a good deal on them I would have the toyos on the K10 as well. For what it's worth the generals did well on my last wheeling trip. I'm open diffs front and rear and had no issues. Granted I wasn't doing anything gnarly

My wife immediately noticed a difference in noise on the highway. She said if all that noise was just due to the tires she would have said to buy new tires years ago. With the Dunlop mud rovers you couldn't carry a conversation without raising your voice.

If my wife likes it then I like it.

I am thinking of going with a set of these myself for my next set of tire's. Toyo has a 385/70/16 M/T tire that would fit my truck. I have read a few reviews about these Toyo M/T's, and they say they ride and wear well for any type of off-road or street driving. I currently have a new set of 36/13.50/16 Interco IROK bias ply tires with about 3000 miles on them. They are a decent tire for the money, but heavy as hell because of the super thick rubber construction. They are a little scary at any speed over 65 MPH because they are not exactly speed rated tires.

Mastercraft is Cooper's commercial fleet brand name. They're more likely to offer higher load range options, but otherwise they're similar tires produced by the same processes as the Coopers. I have about 6 miles on a pair of them and I'm very happy so far. ;) :haha: :rotfl:

I started running Toyo MT's about 6 yrs ago on my rigs . I have to say they are the best tire I have ever run .

Just wish they made then in a 16.5 so I could run my Welds.
