Trail Clean Up Truck Project w/pics

How about running it on propane? It burns clean, no?

I like the propane idea and have done quite a bit of research on it.

-Pros
-Runs clean
-Cons
-Not enough availability to get this truck long distances through the Colorado rockies.
-Not enough space to mount tank(s) to have enough capcity without taking up bed space, which defeats the purpose of the truck.

Looked into dual fuel set ups for the propane/gas as an alternative and still can't see the clear logic for a truly useful truck. Partly because the 454 is going to simply consume too much of it too quickly to get me too far. :doah:

Would be kinda ironic too......"yes, it burns clean!!..........but it consumes more bottles of propane per mile than all the BBQ grills in your neighbor hood combined":haha:

I also looked into electric conversions...and at this point all I can say is :haha::haha:...The truck would have to be ALL batteries to get enough umph to move it for very long.

I still think a diesel would be best set up to run bio diesel. If we could get decent mileage out of it that would solve half the issue. Not overly concerned with the power, but it would be nice.

6.2 would probbaly run the bio more easily than 6.5, I think.

My brother might have 1 or 2 around.

Last weekend at TDS I noticed a lot of guys from "The Few" were running the ole chevy diesels.

I know the 6.2 is not the most desireable motor on earth, but if it would make the truck economical and useful to drive, plus fit the "clean" image I think it would be worth it.

I have only driven the truck a little bit, but it currently seems to get about 6 mpg:doah:

So the nearest trail is actually 74 miles from my house. So that is 25 gallons just to get to the trail and back. At $2 a gallon it is $50 just to get to and from the CLOSEST trail! Obviously if we go back to $4 a gallon something needs to change on the truck to make us efficient at all to use. I would really like to get it to some of the trails around here that are 200+ miles away.

6.2 would be the way to go.

I agree with the 6.2 swap. It will have the torque you need and should be able to run you at highway speeds. And eventually you could throw a turbo on it and make a little more power as well.

Not sure what your ideas on paint were but it might be worth a shot to see if the Als liner vendor on here would hook you up with a donation.

I am still trying to get my D60 as well. My dads friend in north dakota has a lot of big axles and he was pretty sure he had a few d60s lying around. I will try to find out if I can get a couple for real cheap or better yet free. If I can I would be willing to donate 1 to you for the cause. Especially since you are in CO. Give me a little while to find out for you.

I agree with above. I wanna see a whole truck in bed coating material and al's can do colors. I think it would be sweet

The 6.5 non turbo was just an a 6.2 with some upgrades and displacement boost. The 6.2 was replaced in the HMMWV with 6.5 non-turbo engines, not turbo versions as stated by an earlier poster. The heads on the 6.5 NA are better. The coolant passages are enlarged to help prevent the cracking that was common on the 6.2. When we repowered our HMMWVs to 6.5s from the 6.2, there was no noticeable power difference in the two engines. If you check the diesel place or diesel page they might beter fill you in on all the differences between the two engines.

David, For the build here, I believe the 6.2/6.5 would be the better choice due to availability, ease of the swap, and the economy offered. This isn't going to be a tow truck pulling a 12000lb trailer to the trail. It is a trash hauler. The NA 6.2/6.5 or a turbo version would fit htis project just about perfectly.

I run 39.5 swampers on my Suburban with 5.13 gears and a 700R4 tranny. overdrive works great over 60/65( need a little lower gears to make it perfect), I can run 70-75 on the highway without a problem unti lI hit a grade, then I slow down to about 60-65. I even have enough rpm left to downshift for passing at 70. My truck wieghs about 6700lbs and I pull 15 mpg. I would love to throw a turbo on it to give it that little extra oomph for the hills and probably a little better mpg too. Evferything else can stay the same. It works great. Even offroad.

Warn apparently liked the scallops that you guys made so much fun of!!!

Saw this in Moab!!!

.....and you thought this was too 80's to keep.

This is an awesome concept!! I wish there were more folks around here that had this mentality!

You do realize, you are building this truck better than most people build their wheelers?:haha::haha:

Thanks for the link. I have been thinking about a crane for the bed for a long time. I have a Bulldog 10k winch for the bed and a Ramsey 15k for the front.

I'm kinda stalled out on time and money for the project right now. Our current economy cut the truck budget.

I am the one who bought this truck. I found it out in San Antonio and brought it down to Houston. It will be a project/daily driver. My other square body is a 79 C-20 that will tow anything and is just a work truck. Nothing pretty on it.

My plans with this truck are to put a Cummins in it soon. Either a 4bt or a 5.9. I have a lot of friends who are diesel mechanics that will rebuild the Cummins for me for cheap and a buddy that can make an adapter plate to mate an Allison behind it. So those are my plans for now. I will start a new build thread on here and update it along with the one on 67-72 trucks.

Thanks.

I still get calls on it.

After lots of interest was lost in the truck and the economic crash I just didn't have the time, money or space to finish it. Really wish it got completed.

It sparked lots of cool "trail clean up trailers" :thumb::waytogo:

Reborn again!

I am now the current owner of the truck and did the cummins swap.
I bought this truck last year and have slowly been working out the kinks and making a daily driver. Will try and keep this project going and get some new pics!!:woot:
