tranfer case output shaft always leaking

i had the same issue it was the plug at the end of my yoke on my drive shaft. what i did to fix it till i had the money to get a new yoke is i cleaned out the inside of the yoke relly good with some brake cleaner then i pressed some rtv down inside it with a wooden dowel pin. that worked for a wile untill i finally broke down and got it fixed. i took my driveshaft down to a local drive shaft shop where the guy welded me a plug and put some kind of epoxy but i never had a problem since.

I am surprised no one mentionned the bushing?
Because of the angle on the slip yoke, the bushing wears out more than the yoke itself because it's bronze not steel, so even when you replace the seal, it will leak again becuase it's moving around.
You replace the bushing in the tailhousing and the seal at the same time and it will be good.
No need to change the yoke unless it has some real bad grove.

Might. Someone mentioned the splines wearing a bit and the ATF running past them after that. Makes sense as mine got a new GM seal and bushing the summer of '09 and it didn't stop it at all.

If mine sits for a while you can see a little drip at the u-joint. After it's been driven you can sorta see how everything back there is wet but no drips.
Didn't make one lick of difference in the leak.

yep there is a plug at the end of your yoke near the u-joint. i changed my bushing thinking that would solve the problem with no avail. but either the plug on the end of the yoke is leaking or you have a crack on your yoke somewhere.

Guys, I picked up an 89 last weekend, and have noticed the same problem. Does yours look like this? small drip on the joint, and fluid sprayed under floorboards?

I am new to the game and need specifics. What exactly to I need to get, and is there a "how to" on replacing this stuff?

Oops, didn't see the Bushing.
On mine it solved it. Before I changed the bushing I would change the seal and in a few weeks it would leak again because the slop up and down would ruin the new seal fast.
I do have on my van now a leak from the plug in the yoke and I was thinking of puting some sealant and a screw that fits just right.
For now I park it downhill because it used to leak if I parked it uphill, and while driving it doesn't really leak.

Doing this could cause the Yoke to hydro lock and not slip as it should (that is the whole reason there is a small hole in the end plug, to keep the Yoke from hydro locking).

Exactly! Same little drip of fluid on the joint. I have much more ATF-undercoating than you do though.

I could not see the hole in my slip yoke?? I looked up in there insde the U-Joint at the end of the yoke and mine appears solid, that is why I was wondering where else this leak could be coming from becuase I do not have any fluid or leaks on the shaft of the yoke itself. It seems if it was running down the yoke from a bad seal, I would see fluid on the yoke shaft?

Im still looking for the solution, if yall have any ideas.

new info tho...just got a 4" lift and some 37s and a 14bff for the rear....just in case that changes your suggestion.

is the SYE worth it? I couldnt do that for a while...but i could start saving. Or can I just get a new yoke? those seem to be around 50-60 bucks.

i know its not a huge issue, but im really tired of it leaking everywhere

easy to change? any issues with the truck about to be lifted or anything? I dont want to get a new yoke, and then have driveshaft length issues and have to change it or something....sorry, im a noob

where are yall ordering them from these days? anything in particular i need to know other than its an 89 with a 241?

also, how hard are they to swap?

Do you need a rear shaft with the lift?

Optimum solution is a SYE. I'm kinda sorta leaving mine leak until I can do that, even with it staying at stock height. Unless the leak gets worse...
