Transfer case compatibility

If they are both from a TH350, yes.

Edit - I'm guessing you have an np203 in the '78, right?

Gotcha, yes it should be a direct swap.

Note that np203 shifters are problematic so if you use this truck in 4wd much this might be a good time to consider a shifter upgrade. Off Road Design make a twin stick conversion for the np203.

Good idea. Im about tapped for cash hopefully the ORD kit isnt too expensive

Is this install possible and safe to do alone? I’m looking into a tranny jack or that adapter thing you can use on a floor jack. I know the np203 is heeeeeaaavy like 300lbs.

In my 30s I wrestled 203s in by myself with no Jack. In my 50s now and last time I worked on one I used the transmission jack.
If you have a good adjustable adapter it should go smooth

You can do it alone but I would recommend the jack adapter.
Replace the TC input seal as well as the trans output seal.
Note the original input seal on the TC was a double lip seal IIRC. Quite sure you use 2 seals back to back now with the replacements.
Trans fluid can migrate to the TC with bad seals or a single seal at the input.
Something to look into.
Been a long time.

I had to get help to put my 203 back on the jack to install in the truck. I didn’t have a low profile jack then either and barely cleared the frame rail when removing from under the truck with 35’s.

I have 37’s but I do have a low pro jack, something good from my lowrider era...
I will get the adapter.

The 203 is definitely off balance. Caution.
75$ for TC mounts better be good.

I'd chain or ratchet strap the t-case to the jack adapter ,then you wont have to have an EMT remove it from your skull if it decides to slip--and they do,because its not well balanced and the shape of it makes it tough to sit on the adapter squarely..

I have R &R'd several t-cases alone, but didn't enjoy doing it--no one to call for help sucks if something goes sour, the other person doesn't need to help install it or know how to do anything but dial a phone..

Would you suggest the transmission jack to be somewhere safer? I see they have one that lays flat and can rise. The others Ive seen, appear to be for those fortunate enough to have a vehicle lift.

It’s going to be a real hoot trying to get the one Im picking up today, out of my car... hahahahaha
Anyone in Gilbert, AZ hahahahahahah

This one looks decent

For what you want to do it is safer with a transmission Jack but that one you show could be good enough if you secure it well to the Jack.
I have one of those but I ended up getting a better transmission jack because I have bigger rigs with bigger transmission.
I have even done it with a regular Jack, it just was much harder.

I only have the adapter for my floor jack..works ok,the one pain was getting the t-case on the adapter, then having to jack the truck up higher so I could roll it under the frame--had to use a scary bumper jack to do that, seeing I only had the one floor jack at the time..
