Transfer case options. Doubler or magnum

Agreed, the magnum definitely has more pros than cons. Only real con I see is the expense.

The 203 was given to me so I’m not out anything. I think the magnum is still the way I want to go.

Why is it that automatics are 2x crawl ratio?
Meaning the mechanical gearing of a standard is 2x lower than the first gear in an auto

Automatic have the essential gear reduction of the torque converter. It's not an exact number cause it varies the closer to stall it gets

I think @Bent77 mentioned this to me some time back, and I think the 241/205 doubler would be great but all the links I find have the "photobuckethex" so no more pics available. Anybody know of any threads with a complete write up and pics on doing this? I figured I might as well do one while the K5 is down for a while.
Who knows, maybe I'll paint it orange.

@1977k5 made one several years ago, maybe he'll see this and chime in.

I enjoy my 203-205 but if I did it again I would use a 241.

The ratios are nicer and overall more useful, it's lighter and nowadays it's probably easier to source parts for.

One big thing I noticed that really sets the magnum apart from the others is that it can be used on either the round or figure 8 pattern 205. The NWF needs a 3/4” (I think) adapter to run a figure 8. Magnum just seems more adaptable.

The more I learn about this magnum box the more I need it rather than want it. I'm trying to justify putting a doubler in the crew cab so my blazer can have the magnum box. Ridiculous but necessary.

Dont you have a birthday this year?

Yeah ive actually seen the magnum in person. I may be biased, but I think its a better design

Just beause you have the name Chris, you should call ORD and ask for Chris

I think I’m pretty much sold on it. Just got a 203 to add to the ever growing parts collection now :D

The Titan is a better comparison to the magnum, the adapter is built into the box. The Eco box is longer, especially with the figure 8 adapter. For me it wasn’t an issue with the 120” wheelbase however with the K5 it could be a concern.

Round pattern or figure 8 205s can be used with the nwf doubler kit. You just tell them which one you are working with. The round pattern 205 has a long input shaft though. You need to swap to the short shaft if you are going doubler.

The magnum/205 kit is shorter, so that helps the rear shaft length, but it hurts the front shaft length so keep that in mind. Especially if you are clocking the rear case up

I plan to go with the Ecobox. I’d love to go magnum or titan, but can’t justify the dollars based on the amount of use it’ll get. Seems like some guys are starting to rack up miles on them with little issue. I’m more concerned with the longevity in a street rig. No issue changing fluid, but don’t want to have to keep pulling the combo for issues. I’m also concerned with the heat build up because of the little amount of fluid. There are a couple threads on the asshole forum.

Reading through this, I think some are confused when it's being talked about the "241/205" doubler. I'm pretty sure those who mentioned it are not specifically talking about an actual 241/205 doubler (meaning taking the front half of a 241 and mating it to a 205). They are referring to the fact that most all the under-drive/range boxes out there use the 241 planetary gear, meaning it has the same gear ratio of a 241. Before these new range boxes became the rage, there were people doing the actual 241/205 double, and a couple companies out there selling a "kit" for it, but with the emergence of range boxes, it's kinda dumb to do it now.

I have a NWF Titan box/205 combo in my blazer. The titan is the only thing you can really compare to the magnum (and the titan box accepts either round pattern or fig 8 205's as well without any need for a spacer like the eco box, as I know that was mentioned above). The big difference with Magnum or Titan boxes is that you remove the "intermediate" shaft that connects the two range boxes together (meaning in a 203/205 or Eco/205 situation). This removes just one more weak point in the entire systems. The Titan and Magnum both replace the 205 input shaft with a beefed up version.

In a true trail rig, I honestly think having a true 4 speed is the way to go (203/205 is in all reality a 3 speed case with 1:1, 2:1, and 4:1 options is all, plus you should never run the 203 in low and the 205 in high as that puts too much stress on the intermediate shaft and can break it...so like I said, really a 3 speed). There have been so many times, every single time I go wheeling, where I use all 4 gear selections depending on where I'm at on the trail...it's so nice!!

Thanks for the clarification. Do you mind telling us why you chose to go with the Titan over the magnum? They’re pretty close in price as well as what you stated above.

Edit:

Ah, I see now I was confused on the NWF boxes. The ecobox requires the adapter for the figure 8.

Total length of Titan/205 - 17.83” :waytogo:

Yeah that's what I was thinking when I said @1977k5 built one. He mated half a 241 with a 205.

I picked a Magnum Box because some really awesome people bought it for me. And I wouldn't run NWF stuff for several personal reasons.

Do you have to pay duties on stuff purchased from them?
