Disclaimer I am new to this and have not worked on my vehicles in 14+yrs other then fluid changes ect. so if i ask a dumb Q sorry. I purchased this truck to get back into working on my vehicles again.

Prob is i am leaking fluid from the transfer case to the back wheels as seen in pic. How hard is it to fix and what am i replacing?

I wish I could help. I have the same leak on my truck. I would check to make sute your tail housing oil seal is still good. Also make sure the inside of the slip yoke splines are clean and scratch free.

After that I don't know. When I pulled my rear d-shaft out a pool of red fluid (atf?) Came running out. I don't know if maybe the trans is leaking into the T-case and then the fluid leaks onto the shaft and u joint

I just had shafts redone and it did not fix it. had to do the front one and had the back one done because i was in the shop. When i pulled mine about 4 cups of fluid came out.. :doah:

Dude easy fix. Go to a parts store, Looks like an np208 tcase and say you need the tailshaft seal. Its about $5. Take the rear driveshaft out, and tap the seal out with a flat blade screwdriver. It has a small lip all the way around that sticks out a bit from the housing. Only takes a few minutes as i just did mine.

And that is why i love this place. we all get to learn something new in under an hr..

And also the slip yoke looks really rusty, idk what it looks like inside the seal, but i would take some steel wool, or an sos pad (something that will not put scratches in the metal) to it and shine it up. Dont use sandpaper though.

It's not the cone shaped rubber seal that sticks out like an inch from the tail shaft is it? Because mine is nice and pliable and was dry but I still have fluid flung all over

Its that round rubber seal right on the end of the cone (tail shaft housing). Its metal with the rubber ring inside. Mine was not cracked either, just leaked. Replaced and no leak. And make sure the tcase does not have fluid above the upper drain/fill plug. If so the front seal may be leaking fluid from the tranny into the tcase. This involves removing the tcase to fix. I am actually doin this to mine friday night.

I'm afraid that is what my issue is.

Would you mine taking a few pics of the process?

Sure thing man. Make sure to frequently check ur trans and tcase fluid levels and you will know if it is or not if it keeps getting low in the trqns, and high in the t case. If it doesnt its just the rear seal.

Dont be afraid of taking a tcase out, couple bolts, wires and linkage and its down. And alluminum tcases are not that heavy.

Ill take anything apart.. its the putting it back that gets me..

When you take something apart, and you haven't done it before or not often, make sure to take plenty of pictures if you can.

It can slow down the process but it is a guarantee you'll reassemble it correctly. And if a friend is helping it goes faster.

I agree wheels. And if you take it apart, put it back together asap. The more you let it sit the more you forget, the more possibility for parts to get lost etc

As already mentioned, you need to clean up your slip yoke before you do anything! Use emery cloth and polish it up really really well. That rust will tear up a new seal. Once it's shiny and smooth go ahead and replace the seal. Check it every once in a while to make sure it has an oil film on it to prevent it from rusting again.

I'd like to point out that the yoke is wet at the end inside by the u-joint. See the fluid drip coming off the u-joint yet the tail housing of the t-case is dry? Fluid is leaking down the splines and getting into the cavity end of the yoke then being pushed out the vent hole or cap in the end. Get a new yoke along with a new tailshaft seal. Problem solved.

I had the front and back drive shafts completely redone after i posted this.. The front one was totally shot and they only wanted an extra $100ish to inspect, balance, clean up and replace u joints on the back.. Sooo with a shocked look on my face i said ill be right back with the shafts.

Just got my tcase all reseales and put back in. I was right, the front input seal had a crack in it, and it was brittle like plastic. Helps when you have acces to a lift and tranny jack. Id say empty it prolly weighs 70lbs or so. Ill post pics tomorrow hopefully.
