Anyone tell me what kind of transfer case is in my truck trying to find out so I can get a proper estimate on a custom rear driveshaft install

Looks like the NP203. Full time transfer case. Chain drive.

For a driveshaft they usually they want a yoke to yoke measurement. Might contact the builder and see what they need.

203

But for a custom shaft, they don’t care what case you have, just joint size and length.
Who is doing the shaft?

np203 . the yoke on the rear will be swapped out for a flat flange . then the shaft will bolt to it .

i know guys do the ford super duty front shaft upgrade for a budget priced rear c/v shaft . but if you are not super technical then this might not be a project for you .

you will need to dial in the rear pinion angle tho to work with the c/v shaft .

Yea thanks for fast response guys let them know it’s a 203 for everything it’s about 1k for parts and labor it’s at another shop now and going to take to them to do the work

What year is your truck ? In your other thread I had been using 1985 model year for my answers. Assuming 85 in your name was the year. So many of my post may not be accurate.

77, sorry 85 is my birth year just my user name for everything lol

No worries. What I get for assuming lol.
I have a 77, I didn't want full time 4x4 so I put a np205 in mine.
When is was a young adult the family had 78 fulltime suburban with small block 400.
Gas mileage was about the same, as mine with part time. Even with the non alcohol fuel, back then.

ya 12 bolt truck rear .....

but who molded the fender flairs to the body ? ? ? ...... 1980's show truck called and wants there mod back .

please fix her up the right way and show her off correctly .

I totally agree with you, they will be coming off for sure, even if I have to cut them off

As many times as i have removed and installed the one in my blazer, you don't forget. Stupid heavy.

Has the rear tail housing that holds the differential portion that allows the full time function. That piece is made of aluminum, but everything else is cast iron. It is also where one would install the part time kit, if doing so by replacing part of the spiders.

Also has the drain plug in the center between the two cover holes. The NP205 would have the 3 bolt cover that covers the end of the shaft for the center gear. The 203 doesn't have the shaft or cover because it's a chain drive case.

On the left/drivers side you can see the gear reduction portion in front of the chain drive case that allows for the high/low function.

It would also be correct for that year truck as, I believe, only the 203 and 205 were available.

Also looks like I can see shift linkage for an automatic transmission. If so, was very typical for the np203 to be mated to the th350 transmission. Not a guarantee, but a very common combination.

Thank you this has been really informative why I asked thank you again

No problem.

Be aware they are very heavy and very awkward to remove/install. Especially on a floor jack. A proper transmission jack
helps, but still a struggle.
