Transfercase problems I think? Save me from the shops!

Diagnosing vibrations over the interweb ... now there's a good thing for a Friday nite... ;).

That said, I suggest the driveshaft is too short. That is gonna be hard on the t'case output. This may not have been very noticeable before, but combined with the higher revs for the d'shaft after regearing to 4.56 it may have manifested itself as a problem.

^^ good point

[stomis] you know what you were spot on about the fire truck sound. taking it home today that is exactly what it sounded like! it was like this firetruck was on my ass on the free way.

so tomorrow im gonna drive the rig on the freeway for a bit then pop the diff cover

im not sure about the whole yellow mustard paint thing? is that a specific type of paint used to diagnose ring and pinion problems or can i use any old paint?

as far as the driveline goes i guess its time for a new, one perhaps with a cv joint???

looks to me like you may wanna check your t-case fluid level also, seemed like there was a lot of ATF kicked up onto the body of the truck.

maybe low on fluid.

well the shop just flushed it and topped off the tcase

i got the diff open everything looks good the fluid was a nuce clear pee colored yellow, i didnt notice any metalic flakes or anything. im not sure how too spin the gear while its siting their but judgeing from the looks of things i should look into other things now? what do you guys think?

funny note the sound wasnt as prominent today, do you guys think the simple fact that the tcase fluid was changed that it helped the problem? and if so that must mean the tcase is the issue?

ok so im putting things back together now, how do i get the fluid in? i know it sounds stupid but i cant for the life of me figure out where the oil goes? and the chilton doesn't say anything about it?

on the passneger side of thedifferential near the pinion yoke there is a /2 inch drive plug you can unscrew. use a 1/2 inch ratchet and an extention to unscrew it. then just fill it till the fluid starts coming out.

ya took me forever to figure out what to use to unscrew that sucker!

well after drivin the truck a little today the problem seemed noticeably less well noticeable. whether or not this is a good thing im not sure? i didn't drive her different at all even on the freeway the firetruck noise was barely audible.

well does anyone have any suggestions? should i look into doin a tcase swap? or should i look into a new rear drive shaft? or try the tried and true wait and see method?

At the least I would get a longer driveshaft. That one can't be more than just started into the bushing, if it is even that far.
