My 700R4 kicks violently when shifting from park to drive, drive to reverse, or reverse to drive. Someone said it was something to do with the old motor I had in the truck, but now I have a different motor, and it still does it.

Is this harmful for the transmission? I've also heard it was caused by too high of an idle. My truck idles at around 700-900 RPMs. I can't seem to turn it down much more by adjusting the carb. Any ideas? Thanks.

This sounds similar to another's issue on here check your high idle adjustment first this is on the passenger side under the choke.Back it out then start it up,make sure the main idle screw is not in to far also.If it don't idle then bring up the main idle so it does.If this works you will need to readjust the high idle assuming the choke works. This is for a q-jet carb I'm assuming:confused:.Check for vacuum leaks hope you get it mike

it is from the high idle, i have a 700r4 and a 350 motor and i used to idle at like 1500 and it kicked, im guessing you have an electric choke? make sure it works and then once it is done at high idle, hit the gas a few times and it should drop down if the carb is adjusted right..no matter what you get a small kick but nothing like you are explaining..try lower your idle and you should be golden.

First check your fluid level and make sure it's were it should be. If the fluid is good and the idle is good and the T.V. cable is adjusted then the problem lies within. (Note that 82-86 700r4s shift a little harder than 87+ 700s due to the lack of an auxiliary valve body that contains another accumulator to soften the shift.) Since you say the problem is only in drive and reverse. My first guess would be a restriction in the lo/reverse clutch oil passage causing increased line pressure.

It's a q-jet carb. It has the divorced choke setup. I've never messed with the high idle screw before, but I did mess with the main idle screw and it did nothing.

Also, it did it with the old TBI motor that I had too, and the TV cable was adjusted properly on that motor for sure. I had to rig something for it to work on this motor, but I believe it's adjusted correctly. It shifts smooth and kicks down fine.

I never got around to messing with any of this, but pretty much what it boils down to is adjusting the high idle screw which is under the choke? And of course I need to check fluid level in the tranny.
