I have a 79 k5 blazer. It has a th350 and a np203. I removed the transfer case and found it caked with blue rtv where it mates, so I'm going to actually buy a gasket for that... But my question is where the transmission mates to the adapter is there supposed to just be an o-ring? Or does my truck have a bad seal on the trans output shaft(I thought 4x4 didn't have one). I'm kinda confused. Thanks for the help.

Iirc that set up uses only the oring and also a seal on the input shaft of the tcase.

So do you think it's the o ring that's bad. Would it cause it to leak pretty bad? And if the input seal on the transfer case was bad would it leak trans fluid or oil?

Leaking externally or lost fluid when you pulled the tcase off? If externally, then the oring. If when you pulled the tcase I believe that's normal because fluid pools up in the tail of the trans case.

If the input seal on the 203 was leaking you typically have trans fluid loss and the tcase would progressively overfill.

tranny to t-case adaptor or 2wd tail housing = big o-ring

input to tcase or 2wd tail shaft = seal

transfer case adaptor to t-case = gasket or correct sealent.

auto trannys HATE gear oil in them . thats why there is a seal on t-case input .

reg old parts store prob wont have the BIG o-ring. best to stop at a tranny shop or dealer . the o-ring was a comon size for years in gm trannys .

BTW,,,, TH-350's are notorious for stripping out the 4 bolt holes in the transmission case as well as cracking the aluminum tail housing where the o-ring goes....

Clean the tailhousing with some brakeclean,,, get up in there with a bright flashlight and inspect the housing for tiny cracks and the 4 bolt holes in the case really good.... look for pulled or stripped threads...

I always replace the four bolts with grade 8 studs and red loctite them in place before I reinstall the adaptor.... then I use grade 8 flat washers and lock washers and nuts..... overkill ? maybe....but with that much weight ( transfer case ) hanging off the end of the trans housing.... its cheap insurance..

PS.....the quad ring (square cut o-ring) you need can be found at most transmission shops.... they always have a bunch of them laying around.... they are the same ones that mount the tailshaft housing on a non-4x4 transmission..... some places will just give them to you if you tell them what you are working on...
