Triple stick doubler rattle is killing me! Anybody else?

When I first bought my 81 Chev K20 the transfer case shifter rattled like crazy. I decided to remove the NP205 for a closer inspection. As I started to remove the bolts from the crossover I noticed that the transfer case bearing housing was about 1/2 inch further back (out of the case ) . This would allow the front output shaft to move frount to rear excessively, thus allowing the side of the teeth of one gear to rub against the side of the teeth of another. The shift fork was carrying this noise to the passenger compartment. Long story short, I tapped the bearing housing back flush with the case and the rattle went away. As you look at the rear of the NP205 ( opposite the front output shaft ) it is about a 2 - 3 inch diameter case at the center of the housing ( for the front output ) Just be carefull tapping it in because it contains a bunch of needle bearings. Good luck.

Are you talking about the round aluminum piece that bolts to the main case directly behind the front output? A 1/2" gap there would leak quite a bit of fluid out in a short time.

To Mudstud - The bearing case I was talking about faces the rear wheels of the truck, and it supports the back end ( not the front end where the front drive shaft connects ) of the front output shaft. The 2 inch bearing case did not leak so it must have been a press fit into the larger ( 12 inch ) cover. I hope this clarifies my original reply.

I just finished installing a doubler in my 1974, and noticed a drivetrain vibration similar to yours.... in my application, I can hear the vibration above 40 m.p.h., as I am coasting.... if I am accelerating or decelerating, the noise goes away. I am convinced that the vibration is caused by the u-joint angle at the rear of the transfer case, and I am probably going to be installing a c.v. joint on the driveline.

I never completely solved it before I sold it. I suppose I shouldn't have cared since I had Line-X instead of carpet, and the rest of the rig was set up for easy maintenance, not comfort. I wonder if the new owner ever registered here?

I would be surprised if he didn't know about the site. A friend that he brought to look at the Blazer when he was shopping said he owned a Blazer as did other friends. I think they were out of the Lodi or Elk Grove CA area.
