Hey everyone,

I am new to CB radios and recently picked up a Cobra 29 to install in my truck. I am having a hard time getting it set up properly and could use some advice. I have connected it to power and mounted the antenna, but the signal seems weak and I am not picking up much. I am not sure if I need to tune the antenna or if there is something I am missing in the setup process.

Could someone walk me through the basics or let me know what I should double check. I would appreciate any pointers or common mistakes to avoid. Also, any recommendations on good channels to test out would be great.
I also read this topic on this site https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-best-way-to-get-started-on-a-CB-Radio-golang but I could not find anything helpful for me.

Thanks a lot for the help.

Best,
[Dianna]

You will want an SWR meter at a minimum for testing the antenna. It measures the power output of the radio compared to the power that is reflecting back off the antenna. You want that ratio to be as low as possible 1.5 or lower.

You need to tune the antenna. Using an SWR meter inline on the antenna coax cable. Plenty of YouTube videos on the subject, you just need to pick up a SWR meter.

How you tune the antenna depends on the antenna. If you got a tunable fire stick, it’s pretty easy. Remove the cap on the top and turn the screw in or out to shorten it lengthen the antenna. If it does not have a tunable tip, typically fiberglass whips will have the wire wrapped tightly near the top, also under a cap. You may have to spread the coils out to lengthen or remove a small amount to shorten. Watch a video on it to confirm my recollection.

Sometimes the newer radios have an swr meter built in but the sweep is pretty small and hard to determine what you got for a reading. Much easier to see with one plugged inline to the antenna.

Also, you need to make sure the antenna is properly grounded. If you have the mount screwed to the side of a fiberglass top on a blazer it won’t have any ground plane for example. Your mount ideally needs to be on a metal surface for a proper ground plane. If you have to go to something other than metal you need to add a ground back to the chassis or body.

One last thing that will dictate effectiveness of the antenna and radio is where you put the antenna. Antennas are directional. Mounting low on like the rear bumper on a blazer for example and the antenna just barely reaches over the top will typically make it better sending and receiving to the back of the truck and less to the front since the body is blocking more of the length of the antenna. Getting it up high will increase its efficiency and range. It will also make it more effective in any direction if nothing is blocking it.

Cobra 29 has a built in meter as I recalll ..?
