Truck burped while mall crawling

So I’m leaving the mall (for real) today and go over one speed bumb, then another. I didn’t hit them too hard because my truck is stiff as a brick up front. About 10 seconds after I exit the mall on the main rd, hit the gas then … split, sputter, burp…. Truck turns off. Acted just like it ran out of gas. So I roll over on the shoulder. Crank back up… it catches for a second, shuts off. Wait a second.. try again… pump the gas, starts running.. I hold it at 2K rpm for 20 seconds just to be sure it’s ok. Pull out and drive home ok.

What do you think? is it just acting like a carb (Edelbrock 1406) when it hits hard on something? I have always read that carbs do this. Pretty much every part on this truck is new and has less than 3K miles on it. ...including all fuel stuff.

I had a same thing happen about 6 months ago while driving a trail and hit a hard hole. Stut off... and then cranked back up.

Just for kicks I removed and cleaned the fuel pump ground when I got home.

get the off road needle and seat. suppsoed to cure that. My truck cuts off every time i hit something hard offroad.

thanks.. that's exactly that happened, but I only had to turn it over a few quick times to get it going. Do you have the off road neddle and seat now? how are was it to install? Edelbrock has some good tech videos so Im sure I can figure it out. Just hate to mess with anything because it runs so good now...except when I hit something.

what I need it this tight ass front end loosened up some. Skyjacker "soft ride" springs are anything by SOFT. They are like bricks

it is super easy. I did some other stuff as well, check my build thread on that.

basically take off 8 bolts on top of carb and pull it out.

push 2 small pins that hold float on. remove needles , then use a large screwdriver to unthread the seats out, then thread new ones in and stick new needles in. Edelbrock also advises lowering float level.

did you need to reset the float level ? you said 8 bolts... so you do have to remove the carb of the intake ?

what page on your thread ...there are like 100 ...lol

pg 44.

Yeah you have to pull the filter off, then the top plate of the carb needs to come off

ok.. so the carb doesnt actually need to be taken off the truck... thanks man

could be.. it's 94 outside now. But the truck was sitting for 20 -30 min in the parking lot right before this happened. plus my truck runs pretty cool around town... but who knows.

Two things my friend...maybe three.

Extended cranking like that really kills starters and is hard on cables too. 30 seconds, then let it rest a bit.

Second, when they flood you gotta do the one thing that seems most wrong. Floor it while you crank. The extra air from the wide open butterflies helps clear out the liquid fuel...when it catches don't take your foot out of it right away. Let it clear as you slowly back your foot out of it.

Third..don't waste your time or money on the Edelbrock. Q-jet or FI.

Typically vapor lock comes from letting the car sit for a short period of time after running. The outside temp doesn't really matter, because it is always hot in the engine bay.

Makes sense... and that's what it could have been because I ran the truck around 10 miles, then turned it off for around 20 min while I got a hair cut. Then started it back up to drive home.... It shut off about 1 min after I restarted - but around 10 seconds after I went over the speed bumps.

what is a good way to know for sure if it's vapor lock.... better question is how to prevent it with the carb /set up I have ?

Vapor lock takes fuel lines near exhaust/headers or some seriously retarded underhood temps.

If you really thing its vapor lock then a recirculate (IE one that has a return) fuel pressure regulator will completely eliminate that.

must just be the carb.... because I have a new fuel pressure regulator with the return

I agree, but gotta deal with what i have.

And my foot was on the floor when i was crankin. What actually had it start was when i let it air out and then started it with no gas, it was flooded to hell. btw that was less than 30 secs of crankin :p

Im thinking with the less than 20 buck mods i have this edelbrock will work well for what i need

But FI is the way to go for sure.

One thing I need to add… not sure if it’s related or not. Every since I have had the truck it starts up real fast when cold. Sometimes when hot…. not all the time… it has to turn over 3-4 seconds to start…. I have to pump the gas while starting.

Note – I installed the Edelbrock heat insulator between the intake a carb last year… didn’t change anything. I also played around with the choke ... no change
