Truck burped while mall crawling

if you are happy with the way things run, run the carb you have, why would you care when it works. Do the needle/seat mod, since it sounds like that's the problem. Then you'll be set with a great running truck and no "bump stall". :)
 
I'm assuming the metering rods are also know as the needle/seat? Just undo the torx bit on each side and replace with new ones ?



Your gonna have to take the top of the carb off.

Vapor lock is very common with all older cars that have mechanical pumps. If this is the first time your truck has had this issue it seems like a lot of effort to get inside your carburetor to change things that may be unnecessary. If you want the correct carb that will run the best buy a remanned q-jet. Also you need to get the top gasket right to seal off gas from leaking into places it isn't supposed to. Definitely buy an extra gasket if this is the route you go.

There is this period of time that vapor lock occurs after shutting off a warm engine where the fuel in the line up to the carb from the pump sits and heats and turns into vapor. This vapor enters the carb and messes with the float level and can cause stalling or repeated cranking on start up. (I live in Massachusetts and it constantly haunts my buddy with a 70 cutlass) I experience it less possibly because of the charcoal canister which works in conjunction with an octopus of hoses to return vapor to the tank ton condensate into liquid gas. If your truck is supposed to have this setup it was designed to help with this issue.

There really is no way that I am aware of to prevent vapor lock. The one thing I have done with mechanical pumps is to install a fuel pressure regulator. This takes out the oscillating pressure derived from using the mechanical pump. This can cause surges and lags in fuel pressure. Since I put a regulator on my daily camaro I have noticed increased mileage and readings off of the o2 sensor have been more stable.(meaning less rich on acceleration and idle). I am eccentric so I have the o2 and pulse width modulated mixture control solenoid from my electronically controlled carb wired up inside my car to monitor air fuel ratio and mixture.


what is a good way to know for sure if it's vapor lock.... better question is how to prevent it with the carb /set up I have ?
