Whenever i throw it it reverse i hear a loud bang and the truck dies. The noise sounds like its comeing from the drive shaft. Even if the u-joint is worn out i dont think it should die, but maybe because if the "shock" of the drive line being loose then catching makes it die?

There are no other problems though? Try putting the TC in neutral and then put the trans into R. See what happens. It's probably inside the trans or torque converter.

just thinking out loud with no experience though

No other problems except the u joints are a bit worn out. its an old truck and the tbi has been funky i havnt driven it in about a year. ill prob rebuild the tbi unit next month and so on

ah crap, didn't realize it was an '87 tbi. I haven't a clue, but it's weird only reverse would be a problem.

Have you pulled the codes?

My 1991 TBI does that, and I need an O2 sensor. I'm too lazy to put it in ...

If that's not it, and your u-joints are shot, they should be replaced. What 4 bolts? Get in there!

keep in mind that this could be two separate issues.

one; the bang. most likely the u joints. simple fix.

two; stalling. the engine is put under some stress when it goes from park to neutral to reverse, and it might just not have a strong enough idle. does it happen when you go from drive to reverse also? This could be a timing issue or something of that nature. even a vacuum leak that gets worse when the motor is torqued in the reverse position.

let us know what you find!

Totally agree with this. You could always disconnect the driveshaft from the rear of the trans or even put the Tcase in neutral to find out if that takes away the issue.

Most likely its the load of the motor being in gear that is causing it to die though. Can you start it with the trans in Neutral and then drop it to Drive ok?
