I got an 81 k20 with a 454 and 350 trans . I rebuilt the holley carb cause it was running rich and put a tune up in the engine. Now when i go to drive it i have to give it more throttle as i put it into gear or idle the carb up high. Help

vacuum leak.. check the base gasket and ports....

Digging up a old thread here. Trying to get the truck running again. I switched to a demon 750 couldn't get the holley set right. Still trying to die when I put it in gear. Its been sitting for about 3 yrs. I've sprayed all my vacuum hoses and nothing happens. The intake and carb base also and around the brake booster.

Might want to check the timing. My 85 was doing that when I rebuilt the 350 in it. I just backed off the timing and she's as smooth as glass now.
I'd time the engine with a vacuum gauge hooked to a manifold vacuum point. Adjust the distributor until you get the highest vacuum reading then back it down 1 inch of vacuum. Then see what happens when you put it in gear

Can you get it to run at all in gear?

Friend of mine had one that died the instant you put it in drive, as it tried to move forward.
He kept wanting me to adjust the dizzy, I kept telling him it was the transmission.
Transmission finally died on him after a few days. Transmission shop raped him going and coming, so I never did find out exactly what all was wrong, but I always figured the torque converter was binding at least.

Yes if I give it some gas it'll stay running. It I put the transfer case neutral while transmission is in gear it'll stay running. Could it be the brake booster or torque converter gone bad?

A failed converter sprag or stripped pump stator splines can cause this problem, acceleration will also be hampered to an extent

my CCSB was doing that same thing. It was a vaccum leak. only way I found it was with a vaccum pump. I took each line off one at a time and pumped up a good vacuum. then watched the gauge to see if it HELD vacuum. found one that seeped off fairly quik. disconnected it and capped the port. it went away.

Its got 16-17"s of vacuum also. I'm gonna replace the vacuum lines I cut about foot off one that didn't look the best figure 30 years of service it's time to replace.

I had all new lines on mine. ended up being the vacuum ball. I just unhooked it

If it has a 4 bbl carb,it could be the secondary butterflies aren't closing fully.....

I'm not talking about fast idle on a carb or open loop on EFI... normal operating temp is what idle speed is set at.....

Mine (TBI) is set to idle higher to prevent stalling out. It idles at 1200 or so could, and around a touch under 800 warmed up. Used to be a 1000 to 650ish. Now TBI idles lower than a carb.

Good spot for vac leaks is if your tranny has vacuum operated stuff. The vacuum ball by wiper motor can leak, any cruise stuff, booster, but you should be able to hear these leaks if the truck is quiet.
