The in/lb wrench wont do you any good unless you tear it down to just pinion installed in housing.

Yeah, I was wondering that. Most things I have read just put the nut back where it was, with maybe a little bit more of a turn.

Also, they ALL take the driveshaft out. Why? Can't I just wire it up out of the way? Seems like an unnecessary pain in the ass.

I would think you could do that. I swapped my axle out without removing the driveshaft, if just cuts down on working space a little bit (and that's on an unlifted truck, you should be better off yet).

I have also removed my pinion without getting fancy. But I have 4 more bolts than you do. :D

But really you wish you were removing the 6 pinion bolts on your new axle instead of dumping time into this one... :deal:

Well, my 14 bolt FF is 8 lug obviously, so 8 lug front, 8 lug wheels adds to it all. If I go 14bsf, I'm not worried about selling the FF.

Either way, I can't even pick up a new axle if the Blazer is puking diff oil all over the place. lol

meh. I found an 8 lug Dana 44 with the wrong gear for $675. ugh. One Dana 60 about 3 1/2 hours away for $1600.

I noticed muddysub had a DRW Dana 60 that he machined the hubs on, so I guess that's a possibility.

I'm really just biding my time. I have part ownership here at work, and there are some irons in the fire that may pay off, so I'm just trying to hold the old girl together for now. How that turns out could make a big difference.

Yikes. I bought my matching set for $200 (D44/14BFF). Around here axles are cheap, you could buy and ship a D60 from my area for $675 (if you have some patience).

Would you consider regearing the axle you already have? @big dan was selling the 8-lug stuff you could stick on the outsides if you wanna rebuild your inners. :thinking:

It's possible, but I kinda hate to have that kind of down time. I live in an apartment, so I do all my wrenching at work on weekends. It would be nicer to have something ready I could swap across.

I would start getting cranky faces if I let it sit here torn apart. Even the 14 bolt I have is hidden in the side yard under some wood and a tarp. lol.

But, to answer your question, ultimately no, I wouldn't be adverse to an 8 lug 10 bolt, same as a 44.

Yeah, kinda. I know, I'm being a pain in the ass with the restrictions. My dream would be to have the axles set up and ready to go sitting at work, with a set of 8 lug wheels. Then thrash from Thursday after work to Sunday night. lol. I would be able to tack the spring plates on the rear axle, and a guy just across the street can burn them in for me.

You're not being a pain, you're just working within your limitations. That's life. For example, my current "shop" space is an empty horse barn. Sandbox floor (:doah:), very leaky roof, it's just not nice any way I slice it. But that's what I have, no use griping about it. And I'm quite thankful for the 80% of the water that runs away from my parts pile. It's a lot nicer than having everything get completely drenched. And it's a huge step up from the apartment parking lots that we used to enjoy. So we're happy with where we're at.

Lining up an axle ahead of time isn't a problem, just a fact of life for someone who can't have a dead vehicle lying around. Been there, done that, and that's why my K10's blown-up 10-bolt was replaced with...another 10-bolt. Was not able to swing an axle upgrade at that point in time. 2 years later I was, but that didn't help me then. Ya gotta work withing your limits.


I asked about it because I couldn't remember what sort of situation you were working with. It's been a while since your first axle conversation. ;)

Also, you don't hafta do both axles at the same time, you can do them on separate weekends, if need be. My K5 got its rear axle set up in...umm...2013, I think? The new front is still not installed. In fact, for most of the time that I owned the truck I didn't even have a front axle for it. And I took the rear apart again to install a Detroit. So it's still a basket case. :wink1:

Anyway, you can rock 2WD for a week if need be. :)

Wow, thanks. I'll send a PM. Maybe I can pick up a 10 bolt front for cheap, swap the stuff out and regear it to match the 14 bolt. At least I'd have that option.

Or just find a 10-bolt that comes with the right gearing. You're going to 4.10 gears, right? That's one of the commonish ratios.
