So most of you know my other-half and the headache he left me with! If not we have a 1990 burb 6.2L Diesel. I desperately need help fixing the ignition just well enough to get it to pass a state inspection so I can register it so it can sit in the driveway while Ryan is in Iraq!!

I will tell you that I have a beginner level understanding of mechanics. I do pretty well with a Chilton or Hayes.

The truck does not shut off when you turn the key. All the electronics chut off but the damn diesel just keeps on chuggin!!

I know before Ryan left he switched the ignition switch and the key cylinder.. so I have no idea where to go from here.

HELP PLEASE!!!

::::::::::::::::::::::UPDATE (Aug 22, 2008)::::::::::::::::

The truck now shuts off most of the time.

So I think I've narrowed the problem down to the steering column area..
The truck shut off if while turning the key to the off position I push in on the key.. Where do I go from here? Ryan put in a new ignition switch. Is there something that has to be adjusted? ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!

The fuel shut off solenoid may be stuck. IIRC it is located on the injector pump on 6.2 but not sure.
Might want to post your ? or do a search in the diesel forum
Thats where the diesel gurus hang out.

dremu...

An ignition switch is adjustable?!?!

I'm a beginner, I need a little more hand-holding than that!

o.k. go easy on me because here come the stupid questions::

what's an IP?

What's an FSS?

The key cylinder proper doesn't adjust, no. There's a plastic gizmo at the base of the column that slides a bit around the circumference to adjust.

If it doesn't make sense when you seee it, I do highly recommend the Chilton's... not as fancy as the factory service manuals, but they are aimed at shadetree mechanics more than pros. And for fifteen or twenty bucks, it'll save you a TON of headaches.

The IP, in this case, is the injector pump. It's sorta like the carb on a gasser mixed in with the dizzy; it rotates with the motor and squirts fuel into the cylinders at the right time to ignite by the crazy compression. It apparently has some variety of solenoid that stops the flow of fuel when the key goes off.

I will fully admit that I am in no way a professional mechanic, and since I sold my CUCV I'm getting dizzle-stupid ;)

FSS :dunno: Did I say that, or did someone else?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FSS

:haha:

in someone answer they wrote ::: If you look at you IP, it'll have three wires going nto the top. Front to back they're green, red, green. The red on is your FSS, and you want to check while the vehicle is turned off wheter that one has power.

So here's a picture of the injection pump and such..

So I need to pull of the pink wire and then shut off the truck and if that's the problem it will shut off?? Or do I need to disconnect the wire after the truck is started and then turn the key and if it shuts off that's the problem? Or do i need to check that pick wire to see if it's hot while shut off and if it is that's the problem??

First. I would see if the wire is hot with the ign off. Turn the ign on without starting then trun ign to off.
Test the wire to the shut off solenoid.
If the wire is hot 12V you need to find out where it is getting 12V from and fix the problem. Could bne anything from a bad ground somewhere or mabe a bad glow plug module.

If it is not hot. Pull the solenoid/valve and check it out mabe it needs cleaning or replacing.
If that does not cure the problem you may have bad injectors. Does it run rough after you turn off the ignition? Or idle like normal?

Mabe Rene will help out with this. He is good with 6.2.
I am really not into GM rattlers. The only diesel I work on are tractors.

After sitting for 3+ plus weeks of sitting, she started up beautifully!! (ryan would be so angry because she doesn't like him) She has no idle problems..

WOOOOOO HOOOOO!!!!

:bow::bow:Dremu and Thunder!! YOU ARE AWESOME!!!:bow::bow:

She shuts off as beautifully as she starts!! YEAH!!!!

THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!!

If you boys are close to Fort Hood, TX...I'll buy you a 12 pack!! That's easily worth a 12 pack!!

Thanks guys.

hmm, guess I have to watch what I say now that my wife is on here too.

So, Dana, did you just adjust the ignition switch on the column or what?

Oh, yeah, and a big F U to my truck for liking my wife better than me. You get the :hack::weld: :grind:when I get home bitch.

I took some purple power and water to the connector for the Fuel solenoid...

And that's all it took..

Ohhhhhhh... she's not gonna like that!!

well that didn't last. she said it wouldn't shut off again last night. Ran a diagnostic and it flashed a TPS voltage out of range code and EGR. She is oingto replace the TPS and see what happens

Huh? On a dizzle? Since when they are OBD? :dunno:

I thought my '85 was all mechanical injection ... are the newer ones fancy like that?
