I have a 85 GMC 3/4 ton. I left the key a click over the other and drained the battery. I had it hooked to a battery charger for 2 days and nothign worked. So today I ended up replaceing the battery, the starter, starter solenoid, and just replaced the coil. When you turn the key over to install it, the only thing that works are the windows, stereo, and the ac pump clicks. Doesnt turn over or anything. What could be the problem??

Re: engine wont crank over !!

there is a fused wire that gos to the starter it could have blown since the switch was left on for a long time or when you changed the starter you might have left that hot wire off dont get to paniced you will figure it out

Re: engine wont crank over !!

You should check the neutral safety switch located above the steering column by the brake pedal. There are two purple wires you can jump to see if you have a good connection to the starter. With a test light see if one of the wires has power going to it, if it does then run a jumper from it to the other one to see if it will crank.

Re: engine wont crank over !!

what does the fusible link look like at the starter? I dont remeber seeing a link? Do you mean the nds on the wire? Thank you for your help. Im 19 and its my daily driver and portable welder

Re: engine wont crank over !!

The fusible link looks like a thick piece of wire. It's designed to melt and break contact like a fuse.

Re: engine wont crank over !!

Now the truck is turning over but it will not start. It just keeps on crankeing and cranking like it isnt getting any fuel. New fuel pump and has gas so I dont know whats going on. When I look at the carb I can see that gas is being shot in the carb

Re: engine wont crank over !!

Pull a spark plug out and reconnect it to the wire. Now turn the truck over and check if you're getting spark at the plug. Your problem seems to have developed into a secondary ignition problem.

Pull off your dist. cap and check out the condtion of your cap and rotor. It sure sounds like your problem lays there somewhere.

Re: engine wont crank over !!

The truck has a new cap and rotor. I put a screwdriver in the 8 cylinder wire and held it 1/4" away form a ground and there was no spark. I will pull one out and try that

Re: engine wont crank over !!

Have you checked the ignition module on top of your dist. cap? If that sucker dies you'll never get spark.

The only way I know that a distributor can "die" is if it got spun out of position and the tiiming got knocked way out.

Re: engine wont crank over !!

LOL....look up at my last post!!!/forums/images/icons/wink.gif Yes it sound like that's your problem. Pop that sucker off and go get it tested - most parts stores will do it for free!!

Re: engine wont crank over !!

Also check the power wire to the distributor. Could be loose or somethin.
