tRusty is sitting on 57's now (early spy pic's up now...)

Re: tRusty is sitting on 57\'s now (springs, not tires...)

I never had a digi-cam Eric. My wife barely trusts me with her regular camera after I destroyed our other one by slamming my hood on it... /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

Ohh, I thought it wes a digi-cam, looked kinda high-tech...Well what was left of it anyway. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

The busted bit's looked pretty cool... /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

Deb was unimpressed when I brought that home. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

I wanna go wheeling...
hey rene.. you check out my pics on webshots of the new project...

Re: tRusty is sitting on 57\'s now (springs, not tires...)

YEAH! That looks slick! I like the work on the shackle, it looks factory.

Is that a Type-R exhaust tip??? Just kidding! /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

Re: tRusty is sitting on 57\'s now (springs, not tires...)

RENE?

a chrome tip???? /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

Re: tRusty is sitting on 57\'s now (springs, not tires...)

Thats a sweet set up! I'm wondering, just because I do that from time to time. Why not turn the shackle hangers upside down?
I like the arch of the springs, and the look of the truck. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Re: tRusty is sitting on 57\'s now (springs, not tires...)

Obviously I was over at MJ's place last night after work. He was kind enough to let me snap a few pic's with his digital camera /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

I was happy with the way the shackles and the hanger turned out too...kinda 'stealth'...LOL

The exhaust tips I've had for a long time and just never put them on. When I moved the rear spring hanger I had to cut my tailpipes off and kinda butcher it back together. My alternatives to the tips were taking it in and spending money I didn't have at an exhaust shop, or having strange looking 'exits' or the chrome tips. Obviously I chose the chrome tips.../forums/images/icons/blush.gif It's the only chrome on the truck... /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

The ride height looks good though and you can see the springs are pretty flat. There is also a shot of the 3 degree shims that I needed to get the pinion back down to where it was. If I had a CV shaft the shim wouldn't have been necessary and the angle would have been perfect./forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Looks good Rene! Nice work /forums/images/icons/cool.gif .

The angle on the shackle looks steeper than other flips that I've seen, including mine on my pickup. Just curious what the reason is. Also, do the springs have clamps, I couldn't tell from the pics.

In a nutshell I had to perform a shackle flip, extend the shackle 1.5" longer than stock and move the entire rear spring hanger back 2.5".

Shackle and Hanger pic
The fabrication work looks great, guess you learn a 'lil somethin' when you do it for a liveing. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
What was you reassoning behind the needed changes (lengthing the shackle and relocating the hangers)?

I'm tring to "dial-in" the rear shackles on my 63s, and am looking for some input. (I decided to flip 'em, useing ORD's 2.5 kit).

Ohh...and is MJ a jerk in real life?

Re: tRusty is sitting on 57\'s now (springs, not tires...)

I went with a reasonably steep shackle angle for good droop and a soft ride. I measured the maximum distance from the front spring eye to the shackle eye and I got 58" which is 1" longer than the spring is when dead flat. The other measurement is 51.5" minimum distance for when the spring is completely unloaded and at full droop. At free arch with no weight on the springs at all there is 52" between the spring eyes so it should theortically work really well.

You can see the single spring clamp in one of the pic's...it's pretty far forward and I'm not sure what exactly it's supposed to accomplish up there. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif The springs are exactly as they were off the assembly line when Ford built em. Maybe a little prettier /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

Those are factory shackles I lengthened...I made em 1.5" longer than stock.

Re: tRusty is sitting on 57\'s now (Springs, not tires)

Eric, I had to move the hangers due to the extra 5" of spring length. For good droop and soft ride I went with a fairly agressive shackle angle but made sure the shackle could move farther back than the maximum length of the spring when it was flat. Honestly I guesstimated shackle length and hanger location and got lucky. It sit's within 1/2" of the height it was with the stock springs and seem to work well.

I believe the steeper angle on the shackle helps with ride and flex...20 degrees back at ride height seems good to me. I'll know even better the first time I get it flexed out.

Is MJ a jerk in real life? Not really sure if I should answer that. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif He lent me an expensive tool for an undetermined amount of time after meeting me once. I don't generally consider anyone that does that to be a jerk. Does he enjoy stirring the pot online? Probably... /forums/images/icons/grin.gif Does he go above and beyond the average when it comes to research or helping people out? Without a doubt. Have you checked out his webshots? /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

Now all I have to do is post directions to his house so Canmore can find him and kick his ass... /forums/images/icons/grin.gif /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

The reply to FWP nailed it, that is what I was looking for.
Good thinking BTW.

I know where MJ's comeing from, like-wize I'm sure. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

Re: tRusty is sitting on 57\'s now (springs, not tires...)

I cant say why Rene did it that way but I can theorize...
the springs are nearly flat, therefore dont need much more rearward shackle travel.
so to maximize the droop side of things the shackle is laid back.

Re: tRusty is sitting on 57\'s now (Springs, not tires)

looks great rene /forums/images/icons/smile.gif cant wait to see how well they do /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: tRusty is sitting on 57\'s now (springs, not tires...)

There is only about 2" of arch at ride height so the shackle is near as much of an angle as it can be...if I set the shackle near vertical it would run out of room to move when the spring unloads.

Re: tRusty is sitting on 57\'s now (springs, not tires...)

sounds like you used the same reasoning I tried to explain on CTS when im2hi4u was asking about mounting his chev stuff in his jeep.

and I am TOTALLY a jerk in person as well as here
bring on that Albertan!
