In my 80 K10 I just finished motor swap. Trans worked good before. All I did was front seal on converter, filter and fluid change. The rad cooler had been leaking ATF into the coolant apparently. ATF didn't look watery when I dropped it. I have no kick down cable hooked up. Also The trans pan did have a fine coating of stuff on the bottom.

It had reverse and 1st gear, seemed to shift into both firmly. When one manually shifted into second it would shift in. As soon as you'd touch the throttle back in first gear. Got home and shift nice into reverse, it than slipped a few seconds and was gone.

I know the history of the trans and it did have shifting issues now and than if I recall. But it all worked good when I got it.

From what I have read, the govenor can be sticky and as well the vacuum modulator both should be looked at. I also plan to check the linkage as well.

I do have a guy feeling that its gonna need a rebuild anyways.

Any help appreciated.

Sounds like the vacuum line isn't connected to the modulator. Verify that you are getting full manifold vacuum at the modulator.

If you have lost reverse, then you have lost the trans in all likelihood. If you have a good strong forward and good strong reverse then the vacuum and governor gear will be the first items to check. Make sure vacuum is coming directly off the manifold, not shared with the booster.

Yes it's direct off manifold. Ends of the hose were iffy. I just changed em. Now it shifts into reverse. But is slipping a fair bit.
