After hearing how most here are having problem with 700's, I think
I want to put the 400 that came with my 454 out a 1 ton truck. I had to buy a shaft for my 700R-4 in order for it to fit up, do I have to buy a shaft for the 400 to????? I know the tail shaft cover has to come off.

If I did this would the transfer case have to be moved?? I know the 700 would
fit without any mods to the transfer case, because it came with a overdrive when new.

Its on my 82 GMC truck, I have a 350 trans in it now, but the case is cracked.
It still runs and drives with the BB, but I know i'm gonna bust it soon.

Get a TH400. I have a 700 in my truck and I have a 400 in my garage waiting for the 700R4 to die. With a BBC I wouldn't even consider a 700R4 because you would have to spend all kinds of money on the tranny to get it to live for a long time behind a BBC.

350 and 700 = 27 spline shafts

400 = 32 spline shaft

adaptor to tcase is 4 bolt for 350 700 tranny

400 is 6 bolts.

bbc best to go 400 tranny. and as it had 454 factory it should have the better clutch packs in it than a light duty use 400. by this i mean higher quanity of clutches per pack.

THANKS sweetk30, My next question would be does the t-case have to be moved, or all I need it the adapter on e-bay :thumb:

also need the 32 spline input. this will require spliting the tcase . good time to freshen it up. and also need the tail shaft for the tranny.
