Our 1986 K5 Blazer M1009 fire unit has a dead short when you turn the wipers on. the turn signals dont work either...all else works fine??any ideas? need to get them working. when you turn on the turn signals nothing.when you turn on the wipers the turn signal lights lite but no flash both!

I've had very similiar things happen when a wire has opened up. It causes return current through other circuits. If only 2 circuits are affected it should be relatively easy to locate. Any blown fuses?

Dead short means sparks & blown fuses. An open circuit means it just doesn't work:D Check your fuses and trace your wiring.

A short can either melt a wire open or blow a fuse and effectively cause the circuit to be open. Of course the most desired is the blown fuse. But I have seen blown fuses that because of deteriorating wire and grounds causes "backfeeding" of seemingly unrelated circuits due to common grounds and ties in the power side.

I have a CUCV pickup that I use as a yard truck that I could not get the wipers to work and both signals would just light.I ended up just using a toggle switch for the wipers because the truck is offroad only after determining that the problem is most likely in the ribbon wire that feeds the stem.

Looking closely at the ribbon I could see that it had gotten very hot and melted, some of the non CUCV trucks that I have looked at have a heat sink between the connectors.

I dont know if this is your problem or not but I would start by inspecting that ribbon and go from there, pretty sure thats it!

hey thank's!
the power to the ignition side of the left alternator isnt working either. where is the ribbon wire? do i have to remove the steering wheel? houseing? or is it on the firewall side? thank you for any help.

The ribbon wires are under the steering column. That is a good place to start.

As for definitions of types of shorts in a circuit. Take a single pole switch and place it in the open or off position. Run a wire off your battery's positive side to one side of the switch. Run a wire off the negative side to the other side of the switch. Now throw the switch. The intense flash, sparking, and vaporization that occurs in short order is a Dead Short in the circuit. When all this stops, and if you have survived, you can now observe an Open circuit.:haha::haha::haha:

sounds like you need a new signal switch in the steering colum. it comes with the wiring that runs down thru the steering column.
