hey i have an 89 k5 with the stock 241. is it possible to make it the twin stick like the 205? also i read some time ago about making it a doubler anybody know the link to a place that sells the kit? thanx sandypants- eglin afb fl

ps.s how much power can this unit handle behind the sm465

I've got a 241 torn appart in my basement right now...there is no practical way to make it a twin stick as far as I can tell. One shift rail for both range and mode.

there are a few people on pirate4x4 making kits

here is my kit:

mine is from D&D. its a 231 case in the front, 241 in the back. he also has adapters for a 241 as the front case.

also, as far as torque, the planataries in a 241 are rated stronger than a 205. but most people cant get past the chain, or the slip yoke. but they are certainly a very strong unit.

That's a doubler, which is cool, but I think he is asking about seperate control of the range and mode in the 241 case.

I believe the 241 is like the 208 in using a single rail with two shift forks on it. Splitting them up should be possible, but it would require a lot more fabrication than in a 205. I have no idea where you would mount the extra linkage inside

This diagram shows the rotating piece that operates both shift forks (#58):

I remember 10 years ago there was a company that sold a shift sector (No 58 in Blue85's pic) that gave you 2low but no twin stick.

I dont know about the 241 but I know theres a company that makes a kit for the 231 that gives you 2 lo, it just gives you a 5th selection on the shift though.

that is awsome. so the 231 is from an s10? well a doubler would be nice and i think i am going to go for it. but i was wishing i could put it in front wheel drive or rear wheel drive only but hey cant have everything. thanx i really apreciate the info

yeah, i have an s10 with a 231 already in it, so for me it was a natural choice. however, D&D also makes them for 241's as the front case. one thing to note, is the adapter will mate to any 6 round t-case, with your choice of spines. i have heard of people running both 205's (ford and chevy) and d300's behind this doubler. both of those can run twin sticks. i wanted twin sticks too, but i went with a better low range instead, plus i dont want to have to lift a damn cast iron case above my head to install the stupid thing.

check out this thread, its the 241 doubler:

hmm mating it with the 205 hmmm now that sounds like the ticket. with the sm465 the first gear (or low since i dont use it to street driving) already give me the oustanding lowrange. i think this might just be the ticket, how hard is it to put together i never done one of these before, and what about drive shafts will i need to lengthen them of shorten them?

but i was wishing i could put it in front wheel drive or rear wheel drive only but hey cant have everything.

I don't think there is any way to disengage the rear drive in the 208/241 design. It just couples or disengages the chain to turn front drive off. Of course rear wheel drive only is easy!:D

I am really digging the idea of a 241/205 doubler. And not just because I have a spare 241 :). It should be lighter and smaller than a 203/205 and give you 1:1 2:1, 2.72:1 and 5:44:1. I understand it can be tough to package though, and the guy at DD machine doesn't want to make them anymore. I think you can use a 231 instead, or a 231 front case with 241 internals.

there is no advantage in going to a 231 over 241 in a full size. the doubler amounts to the same thing. the 241/205 thing is tricky. first you need to have a 6 round 205. you also need to figure out how to shift it, the adapter blocks the front of the case, so most people that have done it do it from the rear of the 205 (i havent done it, so i dont know how yet). there may be drive shaft issues as well, and you may need to use a drivers drop 241 (or clock a pass drop 180*) to clear a pass drop drive shaft.

From what I have read on it using a drivers drop 241 is preferable for passenger side output front axles. I don't know if it cures all the problems but it helps from what they have been saying.

this is my setup:

ive got two drivers drop cases, and the second case it clocked the same as the first. i would have to flip the first case if i needed to clock the second case down, to clear the driveshaft and the first case/adapter. but, i have a 231 front case, and it looks like the 241 is cut a little different, perhaps to give it more room for the driveshaft.

well soon as i get back i will look at starting this adventure, maybe somebody should just make a store that sells all kits, could possible create them for you or just basicly have one solid location for everything like a k5 store. well cant wait to get back in try let you know how the 241/205 works out, keep in mind never tried to make a doubler before. thanx for everybodys help! sandypants

Masiony, could't you cut more off the first case to gain DS clearance? The only reason I mentioned using a 231 instead of a 241, is that the case is supposed to be smaller. Would that help with clearance too?

no, the 231 is cut between two bolts holes, to get the best sealing surface. it would be a lot more work to re-due what the manufacturer designed it to be. plus, i dont need to clock down my particular application, so i should be ok for a driveshaft.
