ultimate garage d60 front????

This is what I did...

I upgraded the inner shafts to the fat spicer OEM and the outer shafts to 35 spline spicers. That with new U-Joints were like $350. I bought Mile Marker hubs for $110.

I was able to get a super deal on an ox locker so that is the carrier I went with. If you found a detroit for 500-600 you would be into things for under $1000 but a majority of the money is in the locker.

That would be an affordable upgrade.

Where did you get the deal on the OX?

I would say the ultimate cheap D60 would be to start with a Dodge external hub D60, as they always sell for less than Dodge or GM internal hub versions.

Replace whatever you need to make it function...brake jobs for these are a tad on the spendy side, but not too bad. If you don't want to weld it up get a lockright, some cheap homebrew crossover, fab up your own diff cover out of steel scrap.

I got it from a shop that closed here in town last year. It was their display and was missing some pieces. I guess for $450 I can't complain.

They are 1900 dollars :eek1: Seems like a waste

I would stay away from a dodge axle. the axleshafts are not as readily available aftermarket if you break one. the spring pads are also not the same width as chevy so you will need to do something to accomodate that when bolting the axle under the truck.

What axle shafts are you talking about? IIRC there is only 1 shaft different than a Chevy D60.

Anyway I'm running an external dodge with 35 spline 4340s, flanges, 5.13s, welded, and hydro assist. I also did a 3/4ton chevy brake swap on it. Cost about $200 in total parts and brakets. Now I run the same rotors, callipers, pads and brake lines on the front and rear of my trail rig.

I believe it's the long side inner shaft that's different, other than that the other 3 are the same. I know the stubs are the same. I do know you can still get the Spicer shafts, and I'm guessing aftermarket as well.

The spring spacing is a whopping 1/4" different on each side...

And because of things like that, people seem to think they are timebombs, and they usually sell for cheap. Mine did. Let's see...$900 for a GM 60 that needs a total rebuild, or $450 for a Dodge that needs the same? It's like getting a free Detroit :p:

never said they were a timebomb. the inners are both different. the short side is close enough that you can use GM shafts. I bought my 60 with 4.56 gears for $360, so tell me how a dodge is so much better of a deal. a deal is a deal no matter what. if you find a dodge axle for less then $500 I would buy it, but there are guys that know what they are selling no matter the brand.

I paid $1000 for my axle and but kingpin bushings and springs in it, stock shaftsm, welded the carrier, and put on Hydro assist. I have not broken anything on the axle but I did break my front driveshaft:D .

Dana 60s are quite strong in stock form for the majority of the wheelin we do.

First off, what is your budget? Do you have a 60 already?

I paid $800 for my 60F and all I did was throw in spicer joints, a KP rebuild, crossover, diff cover, and a detroit. I havent busted yet .

crossover-------around $400
Detoit----------around $500
Spicer u-joints--around $40 each
Ruffstuff cover---------$110
KP rebuild kit----around $30

Way under $5000.

the price went down those were $2300 now $1800 thats worth it for those its a better design than u-joints anyway but not for a cheap axle just use the axle dont even rebuild it if it doesn't need it when it breaks fix it thats the cheapest way people use front 60s with 44's they break stock parts but there really cheap so who cares anyway one of the axle shfts,u-joint or the hubs will break before the carrier most of the time but if your gonna spend some money I would get a new carrier detroit would be a good choice

Great response, but please use punctuation. It really does make it easier to read what you post.

Damn I forgot crossover and my ruffstuff cover:doah: . I have right at $2000 in mine. When I break it I will go with longfields.

Yes i have the d60 it needs to be rebuilt, the bearings when i got it where sorta blued(got hot once?). But at the time i was broke so they just got greased and run. Then i broke the driverside u-joint and ruined the outer shaft so it has ONE 35 and one 30 or whatever they are. The kingpins need replaced. I plan on building my next 4x4 from the axles up starting with the d60.
