Umm, do I call this an exhaust leak?

Full on exhaust leak?

Whats the fix?

Does this explain smelling some unburnt fuel when the back window is down?

Could this be an explanation to the stumble at idle I am having?

...or is it nothing, and I need to spend less time under the truck :dunno:

while im under there...where should my O2 sensor be? truck needs to pass an emissions inspection now that im in a new county...

dont think thats a big deal at all, most exhaust systems are clamped together, and those are not air tight. an exhaust leak would be by the manifolds, y-pipe or before the cat converter; yours is down-stream and not a big deal. as for the fumes with the window down, that has something to do with where your tailpipe exits. if its anywhere near straight back or at a 45* angle, expect fumes with the window down. as for o2 sensors, they dont have any, at least ive never seen any, and ive taken my exhaust completely off several times.

Well, it looks like a leaky seal is spraying oil on a hot exhaust pipe. But I don't see any sign of a leaky seal.
If that is coming out of the exhaust, then you need to work on the engine. Its either blowing oil or gas.

Those are great pictures, nice and clear, but I can't tell what I'm looking at. Can you see a hole that it could be coming out of?

Try letting it get cold, get a bottle of soapy water, spray the whole area and then watch it while someone cranks it to see if any bubbles form.
I can see where whatever it is has run down and tried to drip. I just don't know what it is or where its coming from.

Who hodge podged your exhaust? If that black is unburnt fuel then its not the cause of your issue but definitely a sign of a super rich condition.

I agree, it looks like grease or oil is being slung on it. Look at it in relation to the u-joint on the drive shaft.

Stomis, I thought fuel too, but then I figured that he would have a bigger complaint than just a skip........

can you pm me or post a link to a thread that can help me lean my tbi out some? I already replaced all plugs, wires, cap, and rotor...

Too me it looks like your drive shaft is shiny, is tranny fluid leaking down and shooting off when you drive possibly? Or have you recently greased the u joint where the extra grease could have flung off? Idk just a thought

man, im a little slow i guess....my original response i put here should have been in a different "leaking" thread I started about my transfer case....

geez, im not even through a sixer yet...sorry all

Rich condition is generally not going to be caused by spark unless your plugs are gapped way to small. .035-.045 is what you should go for.

That being said a stuck open injector, or a failed regulator allowing too much pressure by can give you a rich condition with no check engine light. Additionally a cheapo ebay chip in the TBI could do it or an improperly heated o2 sensor.

When I bought my truck it would eventually die if I let it idle for extended periods of time. An MSD coil and plugs gapped to .045 fixed that problem.

Definitely the yoke slinging off drops of ATF onto the exhaust...

you prolly right, i was just surprised to see it all collected in that same spot.

educate me though....why dont I have an 02 sensor? I thought I read that some people had them?

I have to pass an emissions test for my county, and with the slight smell of unburnt fuel and a small stumble at idle...im worried she wont pass

O.o TBI is suppose to have an o2 sensor. Sounds like you found your problem...

its been established that I prolly dont know what I am doing....so, where should this O2 sensor be? I didnt see one.

Look at it in relation to the u-joint on the drive shaft.

Yep, I saw that. But that joint looks clean.

look carefully at that picture. the pinion seal is leaking. the slinger that protects the seal from dirt/debris is hiding the leak. you can also see the bottom of the diff housing is wet from the gear oil leaking down.
if it was atf, there would be atf slung all the way down the exhaust, not just at the pinion seal

it needs a pinion seal

im not saying that there isnt atf on the driveshaft.

My thought exactly because mine does that out the rear output. ATF all over everything between the framerails and on the floor where the rear output's joint is.

Should be on the driver's side exhaust manifold. Being OBD-I you only have one O2 sensor and it's before the cat.

Oh, and the exhaust smell is normal for K5's when driving with the rear window open. If this is a K5 does the exhaust exit behind the tires?
My diesel has twin pipes that exit behind the tires (factory setup). If I put the rear window ALL the way down I can faintly smell exhaust fumes, especially at lights. If I put the window up 3/4 of the way or so I do not get the smell.
If the pipes are run straight back then that's a no-no. Known to cause exhaust smell issues in K5's.

I do believe you're right. I suspected it when I saw it was right under the mark, but it sure looked dry to me.

Now that you showed me, I clicked on the pic and enlarged it. I see the stain you are talking about. Its sure not much of a leak, but just enough to cause that stain.

If you enlarge the pic and look at the very bottom of the rear housing, there is a small shiny or white dot.
Missing bolt, or just an artifact?
