Umm, do I call this an exhaust leak?

I do believe you're right. I suspected it when I saw it was right under the mark, but it sure looked dry to me.

Now that you showed me, I clicked on the pic and enlarged it. I see the stain you are talking about. Its sure not much of a leak, but just enough to cause that stain.

If you enlarge the pic and look at the very bottom of the rear housing, there is a small shiny or white dot.
Missing bolt, or just an artifact?

if you crawled under the truck and looked at the back of that debris deflector i bet its wet. but the angle on it prevents fluid from coming forward of that point. not to mention the airflow under the truck would also prevent it from coming forward

My thought exactly because mine does that out the rear output. ATF all over everything between the framerails and on the floor where the rear output's joint is.

Should be on the driver's side exhaust manifold. Being OBD-I you only have one O2 sensor and it's before the cat.

Oh, and the exhaust smell is normal for K5's when driving with the rear window open. If this is a K5 does the exhaust exit behind the tires?
My diesel has twin pipes that exit behind the tires (factory setup). If I put the rear window ALL the way down I can faintly smell exhaust fumes, especially at lights. If I put the window up 3/4 of the way or so I do not get the smell.
If the pipes are run straight back then that's a no-no. Known to cause exhaust smell issues in K5's.
X2 on the back window deal. But the o2 sensor is not in the manifold It is on the drivers side but in the pipe just under the manifold. Im 90% sure on this, its been awhile since I was working on my 89's exhaust though.

Yes they do, I cant remember the price but I think its pretty cheap. I had to replace the one in my 89 once, it wasnt too hard to do

what would the symptoms of a bad one be? I really want to have all the simple stuff taken care of before I go try for my emissions inspection

The O2 sensor is in your manifold. It should be easy to do. The only difficulty is if it is seized.

Yeah, my '92 350 TBI had it in the manifold and that's the only place I've ever seen them in TBI trucks.

An O2 sensor for your truck should be under $100. www.rock-auto.com will list several.

O2 Sensor

If its the same as in the 87, it should be around $20.

They sell a special socket, that makes the job MUCH easier. It is fairly large, and has a slot to run the pigtail through, so you don't break the wire off.

It should be in the Y-pipe, drivers side, before the Catalytic Converter.

My understanding is that they get dirty / less responsive with time, and should be replaced fairly often(every few years).

I usually soak it in WD or PB a few times a few days before trying to remove one.

The new one should have a coat of antisieze, which is special to o2 sensors. Other types may damage the sensor.

Mine was $20 for my 91. And mine is in the y pipe stock, drivers side. wiring goes up into trans wiring loom.

Purple wire if i remember correctly. AND, special socket not needed. Use a box end wrench.

X2 Mine is in the Y pipe on my '90.

Yeah, that's not right. Definitely fix the check engine light. Does that even illuminate when you turn it on? Reading the codes on those old OBD-I trucks was super easy.

Check engine light illuminates when u are starting the truck...but goes off as soon as it starts. Should I go ahead and replace the o2 sensor? Do I read a code even if the check engine light isn't coming on?

Eh, try it. Definitely should be illuminating if your exhaust smells that bad.

For the record I realized I have an '89 350 TBI Y pipe sitting here and there's no O2 sensor bung in it. I'm thinking d-side manifold here.

This. Mines is (was) on the driver side manifold right before the collector. Its a purple wire that goes down behind the intake on top of the tranny. Its gonna be a black pigtail with a purple wire leading off it.

Only codes related to emissions light the lamp. There may be other codes stored. Reading them is free and good information for troubleshooting.

Found the sensor...drivers ride just past manifold. Replace? Or try something else for the issue? Btw, its my "service engine soon" light that comes on when I start her up....is that the same as the check engine light?
