I really feel some serious Phoenix bashing here, but her is my current read:

Bashing is OK... I want to get all the sides of the story... If nobody was bashing I would be suspicious that there was some sort of conspiracy. Of course, I'm always suspicious that there's a conspiracy. In fact, ther IS always a conspiracy, it's just that I can't always prove it.

I moved here from PHX about 3 years ago, was living in Atlanta, GA. Company wanted me to relocate with a promotion to PHX. After living on the east coast for the last 15 years, I said what the hell. Now keep in mind I have a two kids and a wife and lots of family on the east coast. I agreed to relocate for the company I worked for.
I have now been in PHX for 3 years, and left the company that moved me out here, you could not drag me out of PHX kicking and screaming. The heat for 3 months of the year is absolutely brutal, and it does take some getting use to, but he other 9 months of the year its awesome.

Company Loyalty will get you nothing anymore. Twice now I've been told, and I quote one actual Company Owner, "Man, you did a great job of getting this office up and running. Thanks for all your hard work. We can take it from here." Then I had the pleasure of watching them run it into the ground without me. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Anyways, I'll work hard for any company that rewards the effort. If they don't, I'll find another job. I see too many people stick with a crappy job just because they're afraid of change. Not me!

I live in the Gilbert area about 5 miles from Mesa where Marv lives, and it's awesome. Housing is reasonable and the cost of living is not bad at all.

Many of the jobs I see on the job boards are in Gilbert. Sounds like the 'new' area... Same with Indy and most cities. There is an area that is growing and healthy... The trick is to live about 20 minutes away from the jobs and commerce... Then in 10 years when the city swallows up your home, you sell for double what you paid and move another 20 minutes out. If I can wait out the downswing inthe local economy, that's what will happen here in the next 5 years. I bought right on the edge of development, and even in the past year it's already started to swallow up the small town I live in. Sad for the small towns, but innevitable. May as well take advantage of it and make a few bucks.

If you like to wheel, this is the place for it. I live for the wheeling the other 8 months of the year. We spend between 2 to 3 weekends a month on the trails and camping.

I've always been a GearHead... It was cars until I moved to WI... I was driving a 300hp Malibu and the Wife had a 300hp Camaro. After one winter of that, we bought 4x4's... Bought her a nice 4x4 S10 Blazer, and me a beater 4x4 S10 Blazer to put a V8 in. After I got a taste of that, I got into trailriding and 4x4 clubs and such. I still have a 300hp Camaro, but find that it's much more difficult to enjoy it legally than to enjoy a 4x4 legally. Plus 4x4ing is good fun for the whole family like you said. When my son was born I got out of it for a while because it wasn't as much fun to go and leave the Fam at home... Now he's old enough that he's showing interest and he and I could go for the day or weekend until the Wife and Baby Girl get old enough to go too. Time to start saving for lockers!!!

Phx is not bad in my opinion at all. It's all about what you are use to, every area has bad areas, no question about it. The Gilber area is growing and the communities are awesome.

Exactly... I lived near Detroilet and was able to work in the Motor City and commute to a 'Safe Haven' neighborhood where you didn't need bulletproof glass to save you from Detroit's stray bullets. I am sure the same can be done in Phoenix, only with much less brutal winters. I know there is a land where cars don't rust, but I have lived in the Midwest so long that I would have to see it to believe it. In MI and WI I saw cars as new as 3 years old already rusting...

If you are seriously thinking about relocating to Phx, and want to come out and check it out for a weekend, Our family would be more than happy to put you up for the weekend and show you around some, but don't forget, I'm totally into Phx, so my opinion about Phx is one sided.
If you are serious about coming out, drop me a PM and we can talk.
Good luck!!!

Every time I lose my faith in Humanity, somebody has to go and do something nice! I appreciate the offer, and will do my best to take you up on it. Right now funds are too tight for that kind of roadtrip, but if I can get a job nibble out that way and can get them to pay for a trip out I'll definitely look you up for a tour. Money seems to come and go like the clouds here, so who knows, maybe next week I'll have the cash to come visit??? I will keep you posted.
Cheers,
Scott
