There are many advantages to Unimog portal axles:
Strength: stronger than a Dana 70.
The rear axle shafts are huge and the splines sit entirely above the shaft diameter. Due to the use of portal reduction, there's half the torque on the axle shaft! Axle splines are a very large 8 spline pattern, which is roughly equal in strength to a conventional 35/40 spline pattern such as those found in large Dana's and because of the reduction in the portal, there's half the torque on them!
Front axle maximum load (GAWR) starts at 5500 lbs.
Rear axle maximum load (GAWR) starts at 5500 lbs.
Maximum Rated Speed: 60 mph, 55 mph sustained with 39 inch tall tires
Front axle U-joints are mounted in a CV joint to reduce operating angles, and these joints still dwarf those found in a Dana 70!
Clearance: Expect to gain approximately 6 inches ground clearance over a conventional axle. We're not talking an inch from a shaved housing, we're talking a half foot gain!
Handling: These axles were designed to run large tires. Unimogs came from factory with 39 and 41 inch tall tires. This means the geometry is already correct, something that isn't the case on axles that are normally used to run large tires.
Oil-bath hubs: You'll never again have to pack your wheel bearings. Went through some water? Just drain the old gear oil, put in fresh stuff. Job done.
Gearing:7.56:1, 3.54:1 in the ring and pinion, 2.13:1 in the portal assembly.
Manual lockers: They're rod or cable actuated, which means you know exactly when it's engaged and when it's not.
Weight:
Front axle weight (dry): 530 lbs.
Rear axle weight (dry): 485 lbs.
