unimog axles...

Here's a little comparison... 35 spline 60 inner vs a mog 416, serious beef...

404's...he has busted 2 portal boxes and 1 cv in the axle... just a mild V8....BTW he only ran a 40" irok...

If he was breaking C/V's it sounds like the maintenance wasn't being done whether it not being greased, or a bushing or bearing wearing out, or bolts loosening up.
As far as the portals go, did he have them on correct side, were they properly lubed, were all the bolts tight? I have heard alot of them breaking, but I have yet to break one. I have a pretty roughty small block with 39.5 Iroks(also had 42" tsl's) and I have bounced my truck up rutty hills, wide open throttle and have yet to break.

they were built by teradon, i think that is the guy in canada, then installed and wheeled, literally 10 times... sold for rocks...

Just did a little looking around this morn and found some info...

The reason a pinion brake is unsafe is due to the fact that the rotor is spinning at, in the case of Rocks, 6:72 x faster than what they would be spinning at the wheels, thus creating WAY more heat than standard wheel rotors...

Not to mention, afaik, pinion brakes are illegal in many areas....

I have heard something about if you break an axle you loose the ability to stop that wheel, or wheels...makes sense but I have no expierience with it.

hey guys, a buddy of mine has come across 3 pairs of unimog axles at a (possibly) decent price. but niether of us are sure what the demand is, or how much they go for...i havnt heard of ALOT of ppl using them, possibly becuase there are more readily availble axles out there. but from what i understand, they are about as strong as dana 60s but with the advantage of ground clearance due to the portal hubs...are there any othere pros and cons to the unimog axles? any help would be appreciated...also, what do they usually sell for? i tried to look on ebay for an idea, but i only found ine set for like a grand...what do yall think??

I bought a set of 404s for $1500 (one steering axle, one non-steer)...probably about an "average" price for a matched set.

As already mentioned, the acquisition cost of the axles is only the beginning of what you'll spend.... 8-lug conversions, CTIS, disc brakes, pinion conversions, CNC portal boxes ($$$:wink1: $$$)....odds are you'll want to narrow them too, since the WMS-WMS gets pretty wide compared to the Chebby stuff. I'll bet you can get into a set of 'Mogs for $6000 - $8000 by the time you're done with all the conversions and rebuilding.

Also, forget about running your truck on the highway ever again, unless you happen to be running a T56 tranny (or something else with a 50% overdrive to tame the 7.56 gears down)

Plus those shafts are uphill of the portal gearing :eek1:
the problem is not axles, its the portals... the problem w/ the cv was the joint, nothing was damaged because it was caught in time...

wow thanks for all the replies...ive learned alot, even some stuff i dint plan on learning....you guys are awsome...i will relay this info to my friend and see if he still wants to buy them...lemme know if you know anyone that is interested....thanks again...

Personally, no offence to the brotherhood, but if you are looking for reliable info you should be sourcing it from a Mog site. The fact of the matter is that these portal axles are out of the norm and the experience with them on this site is limited.

If you look at the vehicles and loads, and conditions that these axles were designed for, there should be 'no' breakage under our little rigs. (Yeah I know  ) Maybe the breakage we're hearing about was brought on, as mentioned, by a setup or maintenance issue?

I looked into it a couple of years ago now and most of my info came from over seas. For what it's worth the gearing was the killer. There are two sets of ratios available, one being slightly more road worthy, and rare (read $$$$). I suppose the aftermarket overdrive setups might help, but what a huge cost.

Personally I think they are the bomb. They are THE axle design if only there were more aftermarket support for them.

I know it doesnt really matter but isnt that a stub shaft?

I think there's a truck in the for sale section that already has Mogs installed. If you were looking to do it, that would be the way to go.:D

There is really no comparison to a portal axle and standard axle. Yeah the 404's are at the bottom of the list as far as Mogs go, but they are still hella strong(as long as you keep the maintenance up)

I run a drive line brake on my rear drive shaft . I made a mount on my 205 and the rotor mounts between the flat flange and the flange on the shaft[I got both at High Angle] I used a caliper from a boat trailer . I had to put a adj proportion valve in , if not the rear would do all the stoping .
As for running it on the road , I wouldn't , but off road no problem.
