Unimpressive dif cover

So I bought differential cover from "Solid Axle" and the cover looks great, heavy as hell and has ribbing along with thick flange.

went to install it........Not all the bolt holes line up correctly :doah:

it is for the right axle, but the holes arent lined up just right

and the supplied bolts dont want to thread in after cleaning the holes out..

so i had to mismatch old with new bolts.

ok no big deal....but of course when applying the RTV, the tube blows out all over my gloves...stupid cheap tube

and on top of that there is no provision to put the brake line bracket back on.. The holes are barely countersunk... Why me?

Soooo... tomorrows plan is to find a bolt and spacer of some sort to bolt the bracket to the housing....if it doesnt get ripped off driving around first.

Should've bought a Dodge:whistle:
 
hmm I think my covers are DIY4x and Ruff Stuff. Bummer about things not lining up. My DIY4x clocking ring isn't, not sure why yet, gotta send it to Kert.
 
wish i could just get ird of this truck, its jinxed, nothing but problems
 
is your clocking ring for a project vehicle? mine is for my DD and the axle wont stop leaking around the cover and bolt holes, so i bought a new (straight) diff cover....
 
I wish I had my old blazer back (one in my avatar..) i never had a lick of trouble with that truck..

Get a newer vehicle and, everyday theres a new problem, light or noise...WTF!!!

This diff cover better not leak, im tellin ya, I already took my anger out on the truck by ripping off the under bed spare tire mount

and my vent wasnt even clogged ( i had gear oil leaking out of every bolt, and cover seam

gears and the stupid gov-lok- bomb was in vsiual good shape..

If i wouldnt get arrested for arson I light the bitch up
 
It happens with all of vendors at some point or another. My 14b RuffStuff cover has a hole at the top that doesn't line up. Since it was just the one and being at the top, I left it out for now. I'll fix it next time I take it off.
 
I had 3 holes that didnt line up.... the top and two at the bottom, everything else lines up
 
they were just off enough so that the bolts went in at an angle.. just enough to piss me off...I got bolts in there, but it took a hell of alot longer then i wanted... (not the bolt supplied with the cover)

its really ****ing irritating though and i still have to figure out my brake bracket
 
Oh, trust me, 90% of our projects are frustrating. I'm sure your blazer wasn't a cakewalk
 
Believe it or not, the truck was almost perfect the way I bought it. I exchanged the drunken double stacked blocks in the rear with new springs and I replaced the tranny 3 times, but It was less frustrating then this truck has been.

In fact I would go so far as to say good night to the blazer....this one, Id rather kick it in the truck nutz it doesnt have
 
Once you get a bit farther along in the vehicle modification world you realize the automotive machining tolerances are terrible.

I have yet to install an after market diff cover for instance that the holes line up. I have installed several and each of them requires some amount of work. It's always different too so that means the axles themselves are a bit off.

It's just the way it is.
 
Its not just the bolts though,

its also poor countersinks for the bolts

no provision for the brake bracket

stamped factory tin ones fit without issue ( used two, one from the new and one from the old--tossed thee old one didn't need it)

covers on anyways, gotta see if its gunna leak over the next few weeks , like the old one did.

the new annoyance is the brake bracket now
 
Just a word of advice...if the new cover is thicker than the old one, it's possible the factory bolts will loosen up.

Someone used shorter bolts on my diff cover, and they continually loosened back up, resulting in leaks. They had enough thread engagement according to conventional wisdom. Once I went to the correct length bolts though, they never loosened up again.
