A friend of mine has a bronco with a bad gas guage and we went out to check it today. Basically if you find the wires leading to the tank, there should be 3 wires. One black one red and one yellow. Or at least thats how his was. If you cut the yellow wire and ground it out your guage should move. When the wire is cut it should go to full and as you ground it it will jump closer to empty. That means your sending unit is bad and have fun dropping the tank. If the guage doesnt move then you have a bad guage. It shouldnt be different wiht dual tanks but Im not really sure.

Hope that helps.

yeah ill give it a shot tomm...the truck is new to me do you know if you have to have the key on for movement on the guage??

that didnt work...one tank had a yellow wire and one didnt...i need to buy a manual to see what color is what...i should be able to turn the key on and get voltage at the plug though right???if the sending unit is getting power that is..

Do you have dual guages? How does the dual tank setup work? Does one feed the other?

You should be getting power at the red wire when the ignition is on...

You said this has dual tanks right. That makes a difference, as the switch can go bad an it will get stuck between wires going to the different tanks. Ferds are famous for this. Check out the switch first. That is how they work with the dual tank and single guage setup.

well obvousily the switch has gone bad and the guy who owned it before me replaced it...but he didnt mark which way on the switch controls each tank...the problem is the guage not the switch..i need to get the guage to work...

Hmm... after some thinking on this I would assume that the one yellow wire would be the guage.... So no matter what tank it goes no it somehow sends the level of fuel to the guage. I would just go ahead and cut it and ground out the side leading to the guage and see what happens. It will at least get you somewhere and can easily be crimped right back together.

This is why I say the switch, because the switch routes the fuel sending unit signal to the guage. So if the switch is broken, even if it was replaced, then the guage will not show anything no matter how much you test it.

so were does that lead me...the fatory swithes are gone along with all the wiring..looks like im gonna have to go aftermarket

That would definately affect the guage. Try running a wire direct from the harness at the firewall to the sending unit. It may work, but if they have destroyed the original wiring to the switch, they may have just lived without a guage. Or did the guage work originally?

im no wiring expert... i will admit it...i have no idea about anything to do with this truck i just got it and no about as much as you guys do...i have heard like 30 diffrent reasons on this topic from various people i have talked to so im just more confused now...im about to say screw it but i have no idea which tank the gas it being pulled out of cause the switch was never labeled...

OK the quick and easy way on a Ferd or Chev is, right under the drivers side floor there is a solenoid valve that has the two fuel tank feeds running into it, and one running up to the engine. You can trace the fuel line back to the tank and tell which is which. The hard part is finding out which position on the switch, pulls the fuel. For this you can use a small syringe or something that you can use the blow air through the solenoid. Put the switch in one position and then push some air through the end that goes to the engine. The air will come out at one of the two tank positions, that will tell you which is which. It is kind of a pain, but it is about the only way I have found of doing it.

For the guage you may have to mount two fuel guages on the dash and run new wiring and sending units to tell how much is in each tank.

i was just gonna syphen all the gas out of one then try to start the truck...if it starts then its running of the other tank..
