UPDATE!!i need a guage technician...gas guage works!!well kinda...

ill just run one tank im fine with that..i just wanna know which one..i think the switch doesnt work anyway cause i switched it yesterday and never heard the tank switch over...why didnt they ever just put one big tank in would have been so much more simpler..

Remember this is a Ferd you are talking about. I know the dual tanks I had on my 75 F100 were nice, I would always keep the front tank full, and add a few extra dollars each time I filled up. (Granted gas was a dollar five then) Then if I got into a place and didn't have enough fuel I could switch to the other tank. The siphon is going to be the only way to tell for sure if the solenoid is truly bad.

what if i disconected whichever tanks the truck is not running on now and hooked a extra eleteric fuel pump up to it,than ran the line to the tank the truck is feeding off of...then when the truck started to get low on gas just flip the switch and the pump will push gas into the primary tank...i have a holley pump laying around that puts out like 12psi...would that work???

It would work, but I don't know if you would have a way to run the line into the spare tank. Another option that is quick and easy is to run a simple manual fuel tank switch on the floor. Just a quick turn and you are on the other tank. It still wouldn't give you a gauge, but would allow both tanks to run. When my dad did this on his Ferd, he put the electric fuel pump on the engine side of the switch to allow him to quickly move the fuel up the the engine when a tank ran dry.

you know what there is a switch with a like twist and turn knob right becide it ...you think that mabye thats for the gas tank???i flipped the switch the other day and got nothing so mabye the knob is for the fuel transfer...lemme see if i can find a pic..

here ya go look at the bottom left does this look similar to what you dad has???nevermind the 2 red switches they do nothing...

Maybe post up on a Ford forum or something, I dont have much experience with that body style but I do know that on the 89 up with the composite headlights have the switch over to the left of the steering wheel?

Is that switch that is black the tank switch on that truck?

here this might help...the black knob with the green switch contols the tanks...i think...but im really not worried about contoling the tanks more worried about getting the guage working...i can deal with one tank if neesary..

so i looked into this a lil bit harder today and here is what i found out...1.when you turn the key on the gage moves but only up to empty (i know it has at least 10 gallons of gas each tank)...2 the black twist and pull knob does absolutley nothing its not even connected...3 if i flip the green switch the truck slowly runs out of gas (takes about a min)...hope this helps any to solve this...

As far as the black knob, that is not what my dad had. Most likely there should have been a switch in the controls for the heater, when it was stock. It is possible that they just connected the wire to ground and it gets power when the switch is on, but the other end is not running to the tanks. Since the truck runs out of fuel after you flip the switch, the solenoid is getting stuck in between tanks most likely. This would mean that you should bypass the solenoid, and connect directly to the line that feeds the engine. This will allow you to run one tank. The solenoids are relatively cheap to replace, but it isn't going to fix the guage. Looking at that picture, it looks like the right side of the heater controls has the switch still there. If that is the case, look for the yellow wires (I believe) that feed into that. There should be at least two, but I don't know if the one feeding the guage will be the same color, and try and ground out the wires there, until the guage jumps. Then it would be a simple matter of having a switch that could swap the two tanks for the guage. Hope this helps a little
