URGENT!!!!!!! need help *update 3-12-08*

yeah it has to be either the dist or the timing chain or the truck is way off on timing. it sucks cause the truck stars and sounds good but I don't want to drive it. my dads friend is always busy to come by and fix the damm truck.

Just pull the distro, set base timing, then re-install the distro.
Get out the timing light and fine tune it. Easy fix.

it looks like he's not coming over any time soon. do u think u can go step by step what I need to do.

I could explain it all, but before you mess with the timing are you sure it is getting spark and fuel?
Have you seen it for yourself or just what the mechanic friend said?

EDIT: I reread our above comments about it just not running right....DUH. It must have spark and fuel then.

How does the pattern look coming out of the injectors?

these trucks are simple..once you get to know your way around em

air

fuel

spark

yours seems to be an ign. issue

pull out the dist.. bump the moror until the #1 cylender blows air. this should get you on your #1.

use this as your baseline and once you know the timing is at least close you can start going down a list.

-test for spark on manifold,

-if no go.. test ing. mod. under the cap with a cheap test light

-verify you have 12 volts at the hei..more than once ive seen the terminal shoved on the tach or just wedged inbetween the terminal and the plastic, easy to do with a shielded terminal i guess.

-make sure you have the brass piece with dielectic grease under your cap..make sure its not bent.

after you get it running you can time it and get it perfect.

just work your way from one point to another, you'll get it. it seems like a challange but its really just trouble shooting.

if you want to poke questions feel free to call, alot of people helped me out when I was learning and it helped.

How do you test the ignition module with a test light?

There is a hall effect device in there that reacts to the pulses form the pick-up coil. A test light won't re-create that.

I was refering to testing the pick up inside by seeing if it is getting power on both sides. on my grandads rv with a 454, he was stumped..3.00 test light showed a bad mod. 24.00 later... she was a happy kitty. im not saying its your problem, just another area to check.

also, sounds like your dads buddy has little interest/busy or something. any driveway greesy knuckles joe blow who knows his way around a chevy should be able to get the timing close enough with out a test light at least enought to run it.

pattern looks good. it's getting fuel and spark so that can't be the problem. it's defiantly the timing.

Did you get the timing light yet?

If you would like I can give you my phone number and you can call whenever you get stuck.

thanks man! I'm going to borrow a light from my neighbor. and tackle the problem my self. if I'm still having problems I'll give u a call!

I finally got my hands on a timing light. and was wondering if someone can go through the steps with me. I also pm'd readymix

as of right now I have new plugs, wires, rotor and cap, ign module and coil.

the truck starts but the wires were moved over either clockwise or counter clock wise.

I'm really unsure what to do now. I really don't want to **** up my motor.

Shawn says to pull the dist and bump the motor to the number #1 cylinder but how do I bump the motor over? do I turn the engine on till I fill air come out of the #1 cylinder?

then when I find the #1 cylinder. I re-install the dist with the rotor pointing at the #1 cylinder correct?

also, once I do that. then time the truck. I've never timed a car before so at that point I'm kinda of lost. I know theres marks on the balancer and using the light I can see them how do I make the adjustments at that point? should it be set at 0*

thanks guys!

Well I am not feeling like re-reading 38 posts so I will make a few assumptions in this post.

If the distro was not removed that the base timing should be close.

Put the plug wires on where they belong and in the right order.
Then set the timing.

If that does not work, then I would move on to pulling the distro and starting over.
