Is it me or are gears getting hard to find here for sale? When I first joined you had no problem finding gears etc but lately seems like it is going down way fast.

Gears are easy to find as long as you want 3:08. You may have to take the whole axle, though.

Not happening!

1) can't find a affordable D60 and Blazinzuk might just find a 10 bolt 4:56 in his collection he said but not heard back
2) not seen a 14 Bolt FF for sale round here for what it would cost for used gears thick cut. I can install myself. (people in NC think 14 bolt FF and D60 are the Holy Grail.)

I think a lot of the factor has to do with proximity for some, time (which a lot of us have less of now days) and also the fact that the price for a master set off ebay or amazon is low enough to kind of justify buying new from the get go.

Probably the other fact is that there are a lot less squares on the road now than there once was ;o( .

You gotta be willing to drive. 14b cost $100 anywhere near anywhere people wheel.

Also it really helps to search by people parting things out that you know has what you need. Thats how you find stuff that people dont know the value.

I think the parts are easier to source if you have the ability and time to keep tabs on what is coming in to your local wrecking yards, or more importantly (and more time) see what new stock they pulled in if its a location that doesn't list stuff). I know in the DFW area we have like 3 pick and pulls as well as a metric ton of other locations but some of them you have to be able to hable espanol to get some good deals, lol.

You also gotta realize how long ago the last king pin Dana 60 offered new under a truck? Also how many times do people actually change there gear ratio over the life of a truck? Once maybe twice?
I would have a hard time buying a used set. Who knows how hard a life they lived? How much are you really saving if you have to replace them again when they let go? I know you run a risk of that happening with a new set too.....But it's smaller risk by far.

That's pretty much how I feel about used gears. Unless they're just sitting around or free I wouldn't be so quick to go out of my way.

Excellent point. Find a used set now days is likely the same as finding a worn out set.

so thoughts on us standard gears? Heard some chatter there Yukon gears stuff that is not 110% up to par with Yukon specs but people like them.

what bearing kit/master install kit would you recomm for 10 bolt front and 14 bolt FF rear?

Richmond, Spicer, US gear, and several others all make good gear sets. The conditions for what makes a good gear set depend on the hardness and your intended use. Some people don't realize there are different levels of hardness and they just pick a set that matches their axle and ratio needed and then they get into stomping the gas to the floor mat or dropping the clutch with a gear set that isn't designed for that kind of abuse and when it breaks they don't understand the why of it. Call one of the companies and have a discussion with them and they'll usually direct you to the right setup for your intended use and they can often consult with you about what ratio you should be running for your intended use as well. The internet is a great resource but nothing beats talking to a product expert who knows their products strengths and flaws.

If you have a 10-bolt or Dana 44 front, remember front gears are the same as the rear. Some drag race guys run the 8.5" (truck) rear diffs and change ratios often (looking for that magical ratio for best E.T.). So that scene can be a viable source for gears and some speed shops have sets available to look at.

Otherwise, I think your biggest problem is wanting the 4.56 ratio. That was not a common configuration. As Luke said, 3.08, 3.42, and 3.73 gears are a dime a dozen. Because that's what GM used a lot of. Wanting a ratio that GM hardly offered means you won't find it in a typical pick-n-pull environment. You can get them from the aftermarket or find a wheeling rig that is being parted out. Or, of course, locate a CUCV. But those are dropping in number, too.

you got that right! I'm going to take a weekend this Spring and go to Norfolk Va. They have a weekly classified called The Trading Post. Usually lots of stuff available for a decent price.
