Anybody know where to get one for a 1984 cucv? Can't seem to find one in stock anywhere.

They have a "pod"?? Is that just the top of the pump not including the cam gearvdrive?

Rockauto seems to have some. http://www.rockauto.com/
Not sure what type a cucv uses, or how to find one that model on rockauto.
Well, shoot. As I was typing this, others beat me to it.
However I've gone this far..........

I went to a 1984 GMC P2500 with the 6.2 diesel. Then did a search in the popup box for a vacuum pump. 5 Popped up, most of them different. Not sure which type you need.

Rockauto has the pod. Not sure what that is. They show the whole thing but you can't add to cart.

For whatever reason Rockauto has that listed as brake parts??

Which one are you looking at? They all worked for me. I see two belt drivens, a gear driven, and a front of engine and rear of engine.

GMC 1984 P2500 6.2L 379cid V8 DIESEL Brake/Wheel Hub Vacuum Pump is what I am looking at.

Interesting. If you go to a K2500, is shows a lot of them sold out. But with a P2500, it shows one left with the same part number.

From what I gathered when mine died,I was told all the "pods" will fit the original cam drive, whether they came off cam drive or belt driven pumps..and I swapped just the pod off a donor ,onto mine without removing the unit from the engine,it is just two bolts..

I read online that the pods off earlier Fords also fit and work, and seem to last longer than the GM ones, the only difference is the hose nipple might end up in a different spot..

Prices are insane for new GM ones too--100-200 bucks, when they used to sell for 25-35 bucks back in the day when the trucks were not that old!..pretty steep for something that basically is an oversized fuel pump diaphram..(or EGR valve "guts!")..
(I wouldn't doubt that a fuel pump or EGR would work with a little modification ,if it would bolt up!)...

Some later diesels have electric vacuum pumps (Fords),but they claim they wont last long if used "constantly" to supply vacuum for the transmission modulator or power brakes with a vacuum booster...
I thought about trying a salvage yard used one,but a member here was kind enough to send me a pump he had leftover,so I used that..

I did an autopsy on my original one by grinding away the folded over edges of the "can"--there is a slotted disc washer inside, like a EGR valve has,a large coil spring, and a breather flapper dewhickey made into one half of the "can"...and the diaphram, which was only torn about 1" long, right near the outer edge where its pinched by the two halves of the can...

Thanks guys, ordered one of the pods from rock auto. Hopefully its the same thing. I wasn't aware that the pod could be purchased separately till just today when I started looking into it.

My normal parts guy couldn't get one for me for a long time. Not sure if he was aware of the pod being available separately either. Prices he was talking suggest he was selling me the whole thing including the gear drive stem.

Guess we'll find out, should be here by the 28th give or take.

UPDATE:

Got a call from Rock Auto today. There inventory was wrong. No expected date when they will be back in stock.

So, anybody got one of these around I can purchase? I'll be calling the largest salvage yard in our area tomorrow to see if I can resolve this situation.

Anybody went to an electric vacuum pump?

I actually picked one up at my dealer a few years ago. Might want a take a look. It was a gmc dealership though and it just happened to be on the shelf. gluck scott

I was afraid there was something funny going on. They were showing the same part as being in stock and out of stock depending on how you looked it up. Sounds like a glitch in their inventory system.
It failed to update all the listings.

Years ago, all the junkyards around here had a live "intercom" system that they were all linked to. If someone was needing a part, they just announced what was needed, and all the other yards heard it.
There was a constant running chatter.
It worked fairly well.

I think this is pretty much the modern version of that.

I posted a search for a used front driveshaft for my car, and a lot of them popped up with ratings as to quality. You might try there. I would try multiple models and year that used the same pump.

OK, just for fun, I did a search for a 1984 GMC Vacuum pump in my area. Found 25 examples.........

From about $36 to about $130

This looks like a nice system for finding hard to find parts. You other folk might want to check it out.

Should be able to use the pod off of the 83-92 ford diesels too. There are many more that use the same pod, but there are a few diferent hose connections.

A-1 Cardone lists a rebuilt pump, with the gear drive..not cheap though, over 120 bucks at most sources I saw on a google search..
Not sure if they use a new pod,or just put a new diaphram in the old one..
Might check out a Ford pod, they might not be so pricey..
