I've put a vacuum to everything under hood. I have three things that do not hold at all, I have not been able to find my chiltons to see if all three should hold vacuum. The vacuum advance I am sure should but does not. I didn't take the top of the dist. to see if it is moving. The egr I dunno. The smog pump I'm not sure about either.

Dont know what method you are using to test them,I usually use my mouth if no mighty-vac tool is available to see if the diaphrams hold suction,if they dont and it bleeds off on the vacuum advance unit and EGR,then they are no good and need to be replaced--make sure the hose is not cracked and fits the nipples tight before condemming them..the smog pump valve may not be defective if its bleeding off vacuum, some are designed that way...

Yea I am using a mity vac type pump. All lines are new. Do I really need an egr? No smog checks here.

I'd say no,you dont "need" it,but if the engine still has the stock cam and other stuff intact, deleting it by making a block off plate might cause it to start pinging under load, and that can lead to piston or valve problems later on down the road...and it'll pollute more--the EGR reduces combustion temps, which reduces the possibility of preignition or pinging, and helps reduce oxides of nitrogen...

An EGR valve can reduce power some on some engines, others it doesn't seem to make much difference...you could just leave the hose off it,that'll do about the same thing as blocking it off and removing it completely..
