So last week I picked up a 1990 w250 Dodge with a Cummins, auto tranny, 205 and dana 60. The price on the old girl was just too good to pass up on. Ended up paying the guy 1800.00 for it. :woot:

She has been taken care of pretty much all of her life by the owner, as he was a Cummins Mech.

Anyways, he did mention that there was a vibration in 2wd, that he couldn't figure out. He thought it was from the tranny, but I'm not so sure.

All he really used the truck for was to take his boat to the lake and back, so he kept the rig in 4 high with the hubs unlocked and you couldn't ever feel it.

Fast forward to today, I've cleaned the rig up and am starting to get into the mechanicals. I've been driving in the 4 high and 2wd, back and forth trying to figure out where it's coming from. It was a late start this morning, so I went to get some coffee. I went to the store in 2wd. All the way there, it was beautiful, on the way back, it got scary loud.... like kept getting louder, until I pulled over and slammed it back in 4 high, still with the hubs unlocked. She drove like a dream after that.

So what do you guys think?

Me, being kinda dumb, my thinking is the 205?? The transmission is going to do it's thing and supply power through the tail shaft, to the TC no matter what. It's not till you switch up the TC do you feel this vibration...

I don't really know.. Looking for some help here.

Thanks..:waytogo:

Pics of the rig.. and yesterday, I picked up the bed trim pieces for the rig from the PO. Should make her look even more pretty. :D

Can't help on the vibe but a dang nice rig for $1800!

Have you looked over the obvious things such as the U-joints in the rear d-shaft? Maybe check the rear 205 output for slop as well.

Nice truck,and a sweet deal at 1800 bucks!..:eek1:..

I would second checking the rear shaft's u-joints--if they are OK then I'd guess its something in the T-case getting ready to fail...maybe a bearing spun out in the case and it only does it in 2wd or something...:dunno:..even if you have to buy a used NP205 for it,its still a steal of a deal..

Sweet truck and such a deal! Have you made sure the shifter linkage is not interfering with the floor or something simple like that? Might also be the front shaft doing some slop and flop when it is unloaded in the 2wd position. Since the rear shaft is rotating regardless I would be looking elsewhere.

Probably the winch up front. I will come get it.

I would check all the mounts first then u joints and drive lines then pull the covers on the diffs and inspect wheel bearings. That's a weird one

Not even kidding, I want this thing so bad lol.

You could sell that for like 8k here all day dude.

I thought you liked your truck, Adam... :D

It would be an interesting side business hauling neglected West coast rigs back to the salt belt. Could be easy money if you had market connections in each area.

I do like my station wagon. Mikes rig would pull it nicely, then I could do more jumpy things

There are a few dealers in MA and New England who do just that--go to AZ and other desert areas, and buy up all the old iron they can that's not priced ridiculously ,and haul them back here..running complete vehicles, and salvage yard rust free shells..they'll take orders if you want something in particular, and locate it,and transport it back here..

Only bummer is most of the vehicles they get ,once they hit the ground here, are listed for 10,000+ bucks, regardless of whether they picked it up for 500 bucks or 5 grand...and the parts vehicles prices are insanely high too..
I realize it's not cheap to operate such a bussiness, but none of them seem to be hurting too badly...no one gets a "bargain",if you dont like the price, they just say "well,YOU go find one,buy it,and bring it back here yourself "!..

Some have tried too,it's at least 1000+ bucks just to get a vehicle hauled here from the west coast..then you must deal with titles, etc too..also,not many people are willing to sell an older vehicle for cheap money any more--you can thank the car restoration TV shows for that..now everyone thinks their old junkers are worth tens of thousands...

That logic will talk you into having a whole fleet of purpose-built vehicles... :haha:

Oh yeah. And a garage to store them. And a shop to work on them. And the list will keep on growing...

Thanks guys for the help and the props on the rig. Just so everyone knows, she won't be cut up or used as a donor.

I took the advice on checking everything under the rig to see if I could find anything. Brought it over to my buds 10 minute oil where they have a pit. We walked that thing back and forth. Checked the oil in the diffs and 205, all perfect. U-joints all checked and tight, linkage not binding up at all.

Ended up driving another 100 miles yesterday after that looking at jobs in the 4 high, hubs unlocked and it ran like a dream..

Talked to Eric last night and we ran through a couple of things. I'm going to lock the hubs this morning (never have yet) and take it for a little drive in the lot down the road to see if I hear anything. If that's all good, we kinda came to the conclusion that it must be the 205.

I've never been in one, but Eric has many times. Thinking it might be the bearing of something on the 2wd gear...or something like that. If all else fails, I'll locate another round 205 install it.

Any other ideas besides sending my truck to the East :screwy: or taking off the winch for better COG? :D

Did you remove the shafts to check the u-joints? If not you are not really checking them as they can be bound and tight when parked and loaded.

Nope, we did the neutral thing to check them. But wouldn't the shafts be ok, if they are ok in 4 high?

Thanks for your help, Greg. I appreciate it.
