Nope, we did the neutral thing to check them. But wouldn't the shafts be ok, if they are ok in 4 high?

Yes, they probably would be OK but with the shafts in the vehicle you cant feel the joints and put them through the range of motion. Just speaking from experience on this.

Pull the rear shaft and put it in 4 see if it does it in front wheel drive as well.

So Mike and I talked about this. If it's one driveshaft how would putting it in 4wd affect that. I think the problem is in the t case somewhere. I know it can be some weird problem but to me it seems like the t case is the best place to start

Driveshafts can behave differently loaded or unloaded. It may not be the driveshaft and in fact be a transfer case but I always start with the most simple things first. I catch myself assuming the worst things when starting a diagnosis but so many times I have overlooked the most obvious and simple problems looking for that weird gremlin.

Was just about to say the same thing. Don't know much about Dodges but could it be a bad front driveshaft, at the slip-joint. It flops when there isn't any torque on it, but with torque the play is taken-up and less prone to vibrate.

Always simple things first. They are super easy to eliminate

I would pull the front shaft as a minimum. Check those joints by hand. If you find nothing, try driving in 2wd with that shaft out. If it is still there, switch to 4x4. I'm betting on an issue with the front shaft or t-case. Leaning towards t-case though.

So true! And I totally agree with not being able to check the u joints for range of motion with them in the truck.

He is a 205 so you could pull either shaft and drive.

so to continue the discussion and to play devils advocate. Why does the noise and vibration completely disappear in 4 hi. If it's driveshafts or u joints why would shifting into 4 hi from 2 hi change the noise and vibration?

Well it is a Dodge! Allbeit a nice looking and great score... but still it is a Dodge!

Probably in the transfercase!?

And I would love to have it!

Drove another 100+ miles today in 4 high pulling a full dump trailer half the day. Drove great. Never really had a chance today to try out anything with the rig as I got home too late to start working on it.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a little shorter of a day and I can pull the shafts and post up the findings.
