Gentlemen,

I have a 1972 K5 blazer. Attached are pictures of the VIN Numbers found in the common locations. It looks to me that the VIN on the frame underneath at the door is 2F607846. but the 607 has been "x'd" out. The number on top of the frame is tough to read, but I can definitely see 846 and think i see the same 607. The driver door and glove box definitely say 2F170846.

The "X's" on the underneath certainly look like a factory stamping. Has anyone seen this before? What do you think? Was the number altered at the factory? do I have a numbers matching truck?

Other than the numbers on the engine block deck, is there anything i can do to verify originality? It appears to me that the TDR designation is at least period correct.

Thanks in advance,
Capt D

I would bet that was done at the factory, I think the ham fisted guy on the assembly line transposed a couple of numbers and tried to ex them out. I wonder about the vin stamped by the steering box though. I've seen complete vins exxed out and new vins stamped in. I've also seen where one digit was exxed out and the correct digit stamped under the mistake. These were all done by hand and mistakes were semi-common.

Thanks for your reply. I cleaned the frame up a little more and took a closer picture. It is clear that the three incorrect numbers were "x'd " out and the correct ones were stamped below. Can I assume this was done at the factory and I have the matching frame?

Looks legit to me.

If I was going to fake numbers matching I would grind the number off and re-stamp the whole thing. I would bet the factory did that. Don't forget that all sorts of low tech stuff used to happen at the factory. There were no computers, no cell phones etc when that truck was built. Some guy was stamping numbers while his supervisor was checking things off, with a pencil, on a sheet of paper.

From what I've seen with modified/stolen VIN numbers, it's usually either totally shaved off on lower priced cars, or redone very well on more expensive cars. I've never seen anything in between, like what you have here. I would put my money on Factory mistake.
