vinyl tops

I think it was an era that it was popular...I had a 71 Malibu with a full vinyl and a 74 Monte Landau with a half vinyl....liked em both real well....when I worked at the Caddy dealership, they had some horrendous pimpin tops with about 1" of padding underneath the vinyl....not a good look IMO.

Growing up as a 70's kid yah cool. Then my grandmother had a caddy, a big boat thunder bird and a Chrysler 5th ave with vinal tops and they lost all appeal. But then again I like the mid to late 60's musle better. Must be a square thing.

I think vinyl tops look great on the right car with the right color scheme...looks great on that Cuda...I was never a fan of the padded pillowy Landau roofs they put on Cadilacs and Mercury's and Continentals...love the flat thin black leather look...you are right, they look sharp all shined up.

My dad owned one of these that he flipped back in late 60's

Not a fan. I grew up around them and owned 2 with the vinyl tops. I wouldn't exclude a car that had one when shopping, but I would have it removed if I had it repainted.

Vinyl tops used on cars in the 60's- early 70's are fine by me, I can go either way. Padded vinyl tops used on cars in the late 70's and into the 80's are... ick.

to me it's a texture thing....it's like blue jeans and a black leather jacket...it just goes together. But I am 49 years old...and I lived in the era....

well put...

but I would also say at this point, I do like em better with light to medium color paints and a black top to offset the color.... I'm not fond of matching color stuff, blue on blue, green on green, etc or dark, dark colors with black tops....

tho my duster was fire engine red with a white vinyl top/white interior, and I liked the look cuz it had the white striping down the side, I'm generally not a fan of white on anything on a car, especially interiors..... as a car painter, white always seemed to be such a "cop out" kind of color...

I love the **** out of vinyl tops. I do have to say its completely about the color break and nothing to do with the actual vinyl personally. Even my old 87 flatbed had a black painted roof stopped at the drip rail/seam.

When I get my Malibu a vinyl/ flat black roof will be done. Either silver or that 70 Chevelle blue. Whether its vinyl or painted will depend on if I decide to do a t-top conversion on the car.

I do however hate landau roofs. The half top is stupid and old man looking.

I did replaced the roof and vinyl on my car two years ago. The original vinyl ate the roof up but in the end I went back to vinyl for three reasons. One the vinyl replaced at a local shop was 125 installed and two the prep for a painted roof was way more money then vinyl and I like the vinyl look.

the bricks were just used to hold the rotors not the car:)

the color combo is not a factory GM option it was one of I believe to be 500 built for Budget rental car in Van Ness Ca. From what I have found the cars were shipped stripped from Van Ness plant and Budget handled the rest. I actually put everything back to original the best I could since chevy has no info on any of it.
hijack over.......back to vinyl tops
