Once upon a time i remember seeing a company making heads that were copys of the vortec (L31) runners/combustion chambers, but had the old style intake, acc mounting, perimeter valve cover bolts. Anyone know what im talking about and can point me in the right direction? Googling just isnt doing it.

EngineQuest Performance Chev SB Vortec Cast Iron Heads
Developed using racing technology, with a superior port finish for increased flow. Outflows the popular GM 906 casting. Manufactured using the highest grade cast iron. Improved design to reduce cracking. Thicker decks for greater strength. Redesigned water flow for greater thermal conductivity. Tall machined valve cover rails (eliminates leaks). Includes hardened exhaust seats, 3 angle valve job and a 25 point quality check on every head.

Future motor build for the 78. Trying to build a stock looking, stock idling, motor, that gets better mpg than stock, and has about 300hp. It will have these heads, a early TBI block (one with the fuel pump pushrod hole machined) and a ht383 ( or similar) cam. I chose that cam tentatively as its the only one i know of for sure that has the fuel pump lobe and is set up for a factory roller block/factory roller setup. Also going to use what i suggested to you and do the TBI exhaust manifolds and y pipe. I will also run a standard edelbrock performer intake but i will shave the "edelbrock" off of it to make it look stock. The whole engine (including intake) will be painted orange. Should be right at 300hp and look and idle stock. And have really good reliability.

Sounds great. You've been doing your research. I'll be watching.... And maybe stealing some ideas

Really cool heads, and for that price you just can't go wrong. I'll have to do some shopping for a BBC equivalent.

Doesn't everyone casting heads nowadays replicate the Vortec chamber unless the heads are "factory replacement" pieces?

The pics are obviously not the same head, as the description states "with heat riser" and those pictured do not have a crossover, which is what I assume they mean. Need that to run EGR, if emissions is a concern.

So many options on heads nowadays it's tough to make the call! :)

What about aluminum? Cost is much more but you can bump up compression and still run pump gas from the better heat dissipation.

Based on newer testing, the AL vs. Iron power debate is done. The numbers are so close the difference is weight (and cost) that is it. Well, and repair I guess but that's an afterthought.

You NEED higher compression to equal the power numbers of iron with AL, and with modern iron heads you can quite easily attain 9:1+ on 87 octane.
