Wanna Check My Fan Wiring ?

yeah, I'd rather have it on consistently than it kicking off and on for wear and tear purposes on the motor and relay..

Yeah that's probably good thinking there. Start up is the killer. Did you check out the rockers?

Thats what the fans and relays are designed for. Thats how they operate normally in factory installations. The fans and relays (if sized properly) should work for years in a cycling condition.

Heres how I have my car wired. I didnt think about shutting the fans off for water crossing but thats a good idea.

Heres the info stamped on my switch which is off @ 195 and on @ 215.
Its a Ferd switch.

well, being I'm not thermally switched right now, I felt that was the best way for me to go... I may change things around config wise on the switch once I run the thermal...

Ohhhh...im sorry, just assumed a thermal switch in the system is the norm. Yea, otherwise it would be best to leave one run full time. Too much risk trying to cycle it manually. Its really a personal preference on how to wire it, each has their own valid reasons and theres many different ways to get there. The relibility of the fans & relays (MTBF) in a normal cycling setup should be in the thousands of hours range. Never thought about the manual Off for water or mud but I will take that into account when I do my installation :waytogo:

I love it just as much for engine bay cleanup as anything else.. run the motor, crawl around the engine compartment with no fear. better water pump life, yada, yada...

Tho I'm thinking I may run the main thermally in the second switch position and the secondary as a manual in the 3rd switch position... mainly because it's so much nicer to light the motor off without that big fan draw.. As it is now, I find myself shutting the fans down when I turn the truck off.. Then after I start, I manually kick the switch on to the first position anyway, to avoid that draw.....

Ok guys so any more thoughts now that my intentions are clear?

I'm going to use a smaller amperage fuse (thanks Ryoken) and the switch might not need to be grounded (I thought lighted switches did?).

Does everything else mesh ok?

lighted switches do...

what gauge are you gonna run out on the fan?

From relay outwards looks to be 10 gauge. That's what is on the original fan harness, and I have a Ford relay box thingie (from the box of stuff being mailed around by the way!) that also uses 10 gauge. Sound about right? To the relay I guess doesn't matter much right?

Anyone know where to get a 50A inline fuse? I assume the standard blade fuses don't come that high?

Just a guess here, but what about stereo supply type stores. I think I've seen big fuses in Walmart's car stereo section. :dunno: Never looked to see what they were rated though.

This is some good shiot..... I am still learning.... I have the fans (windstar) just need to know how to make them work. I'm very nuts and bolts, this electrical thing is all new to me... I'm still at the good ground stage
