Hello, All.
The cab on my 79' K5 is whooped.
Rust everywhere, and worst of all in places that aren't easy to fix; Windshield pillars, and around the "corners" of the roof.
Fortunately my frame is in a good state!
This is my first Square Body, and I want to keep it alive. I am no welder, just a wrench - former 6217 / F/A-18 mechanic - and am not looking to buy all of the equipment, and repair panels required to overhaul - or attempt to - that cab... I think it may just be easier for me to source a new cab, and install it. I work at a machine-shop, and have access to bridge-cranes, which will make that job substantially easier.
I'm not necessarily looking to replace my cab with another K5 cab. Frankly, I kind of like the idea of a shorty-pickup, utilizing a "C" cab instead. Suits my work purposes better, also.
I've been scouring Facebook, Ebay, and Craiglist. Nary a one relatively close to me that isn't in just as bad of condition as mine. The better - best - cabs I am seeing are 4+ hours away from me. I don't have a ton of time on my hands at the moment, but what I do have is access to an F550, and can transport a cab if it were able to be loaded onto the bed; The irony of using a Ford to pick up parts to fix a Chevy.
I will admit to not knowing what a good range for cost is for such an item. I'm not looking for a show truck quality cab... I'd just like to see intact rockers, corners, and no breaks in the roof, lmao!
It's hard for me to judge cost, as I've seen guys selling boxes like mine for $700+, or $150, and then as high as $1,500 - 2,000. Educate me, please.
Anyone near Auburn, New York have, or know of anyone selling an alright cab nearby?
Further, I'm sure I'll need titles, documents, or other in order to legitimately make the swap. Not entirely worried about that, as it seems relatively straight-forward to me... Having said that, while I did pass the "Reading for Marines" MCI's while in the Corps, I could be missing details / the bigger picture.
Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
