Hello, All.

The cab on my 79' K5 is whooped.

Rust everywhere, and worst of all in places that aren't easy to fix; Windshield pillars, and around the "corners" of the roof.

Fortunately my frame is in a good state!

This is my first Square Body, and I want to keep it alive. I am no welder, just a wrench - former 6217 / F/A-18 mechanic - and am not looking to buy all of the equipment, and repair panels required to overhaul - or attempt to - that cab... I think it may just be easier for me to source a new cab, and install it. I work at a machine-shop, and have access to bridge-cranes, which will make that job substantially easier.

I'm not necessarily looking to replace my cab with another K5 cab. Frankly, I kind of like the idea of a shorty-pickup, utilizing a "C" cab instead. Suits my work purposes better, also.

I've been scouring Facebook, Ebay, and Craiglist. Nary a one relatively close to me that isn't in just as bad of condition as mine. The better - best - cabs I am seeing are 4+ hours away from me. I don't have a ton of time on my hands at the moment, but what I do have is access to an F550, and can transport a cab if it were able to be loaded onto the bed; The irony of using a Ford to pick up parts to fix a Chevy.

I will admit to not knowing what a good range for cost is for such an item. I'm not looking for a show truck quality cab... I'd just like to see intact rockers, corners, and no breaks in the roof, lmao!

It's hard for me to judge cost, as I've seen guys selling boxes like mine for $700+, or $150, and then as high as $1,500 - 2,000. Educate me, please.

Anyone near Auburn, New York have, or know of anyone selling an alright cab nearby?

Further, I'm sure I'll need titles, documents, or other in order to legitimately make the swap. Not entirely worried about that, as it seems relatively straight-forward to me... Having said that, while I did pass the "Reading for Marines" MCI's while in the Corps, I could be missing details / the bigger picture.

Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

SweetK30,

I am in Auburn. Roughly 1 - 1/2 Hours away from you.

I've been down to Horseheads on business before. It isn't a bad drive.

Thank you for taking an interest.

Been threw there many a time . :cool1:
Auburns' not so bad, and we're not so far from one another!

It's killing me!

I want to get it fixed terribly; I just lack experience in knowing what I need, and how to get it done.

I'm certainly not afraid of work.

The body swap is easy . Save frt clip . Remove body tub . Set cab on and make a simple u-bracket for rear mounts . Reassemble and enjoy .

Keep the Blazer tub!

Martin

I would like to, but I'm feeling low about the prospect of doing so.

I should take pictures tomorrow of the rot, and then I reckon those that have gone before me can weigh in!

If I keep the Blazer tub, it will be a lot of welding / patching, I'm sure; Maybe it's time to learn MIG?

We'll see what the morning brings... weather permitting.

A friend of mine is selling a rust free cab in Washington state. You would just need to figure out shipping on your end but he has a forklift to load it.

I'm from Washington State originally - Belfair - shame I'm not there now!

I'm very familiar with Cle Elum.

$500.00 is fantastic; To me, at least.

I'm sure I'd need to LTL ship it.

Going by what we've been experiencing at the machine company, it'll probably end up around $850.00 / 900.00 as Class-70, to ship that; I'm quickly calculating UPS LTL, 400# for the cab, and 98922 to 13034 for locations. [Could get luckier with alternative shippers via quote]

It's never easy, man.

I've seen a bunch of cabs on marketplace for sale. There was a truck sitting years ago that had a truck cab with a shortened box on a K-5 frame. Had bout 6" with old school 36s I think. Always thought it was cool....

I have taken photos of the problem areas with my current cab.

I don't think this is necessarily the right place to post them, so I will make a new thread elsewhere with them.

I'll have to do it later, as I am about to go and help someone move into their new apartment!
