Worth the $100?, he's local to me.

This is what I started with:

Absolutely. I sold one to a friend of mine off of a project truck I had. The winch was over 30 yrs old. He cracked open the case and changed the gear oil and the this runs like new. The solenoids are Ford Starter solenoids. Cheap and readily available.

I saw that, I would have bought it if I didn't have so many projects going on right now

If you need to replace the solenoids, get the HD ones. Not just the standard starter solenoids.

thought so, we got a new site and stuff.

So i have Josh to thank for hooking me up with this warn 8274, possibly one of the best winch warn ever made. Sitting around $450 with all the parts for this puppy.

Here it is when i first picked it up

The motor is removed from the housing by taking out the two blots directly on the end, this is what I found in the motor when I removed the backing plate

While the motor was off, prepped and painted the upper part of case. Pressed in a new bearing for the motor, came with all the stuff to rebuild the connections inside the motor.

Removed the brake paw with a 10mm bolt, make sure not to bend the spring while removing. The actual break assembly can be removed by taking the snap ring off the end. Mine needed the use of a puller to remove the assembly.
*note, don’t lose the balls for the bearing while removing.

The lower case has been repainted and starting to put the braking system back together.

Almost back together, the case is lubricated by 30 weight non detergent motor oil. Used a clear silicone while combining the the upper and lower part of the winch. There are three 10mm bolts that hold it together.

All back together and works amazing, I can see why people say it has the fastest line pull.

That's what I run... I'd jump on that if I were you... That's a smokin' deal...

You can also buy a 4.5hp motor for the 8274 for $75 somewhere online... Pulls harder and faster if you can believe that... I've been thinking about upgrading mine... There's a couple of guys up here that already have and love the bigger motor...

BTW, nice write up obijuan...

Well..... update.... It's sitting on my workbench now!

Now time to research and tear it apart to see what's needed. This will go real nice with the blazen tube bumper I have coming soon.

Do you have any moRe details on that upgraded motor?

Initial diagnosis... looks like it will work once I have the electrical sorted out and a new pinion gear for the motor.

Need any help, don't hesitate to pm me as I built those for 7 years when I worked for Warn :thumb:

Well I just learned that the motor will not work for me because the one part I'm missing, the motor pinion gear is no longer made for a keyed shaft. According to the Warn representative I just spoke with, I would need to order a new motor that comes with the splined shaft and gear.

I have to keep an eye out for a keyed shaft pinion gear I guess. Or find a motor with the same price range in a splined shaft and order the the new gear from Warn.

Edit: Found this... http://www.amazon.com/Winch-Motor-WARN-Spline-HEAVY/dp/B002T4U6HW

Yeah, getting a used basket case and rebuilding yourself can be a lot cheaper than getting a good used one for $500 or so and have it break down months later and have to dump that much into it. Still a nice score bro.

In my order I got the new style solenoids. The main difference from what I can see is the copper bus bars. Where can I purchase these or buy material to make them? Here is a picture of how the newer solenoids are wired up.
