Is it hard to get a replacement solenoid for this winch?
I don't know how old it is, but I'm looking at getting a used one a guy has.
He says it has a broken solenoid and needs cable. But says it goes in and out of gear.
I don't have experience with winches and maybe someone can help me with this question.
Thanks guys.

Are you talking about the complete control pack or just one of the four solenoids within the controller? I know you can still buy the complete controller and the solenoids are generally just a continuos duty solenoid (don't confuse this with a ford starter solenoid even though they look the same) which can be bought at any auto parts store.

Man, I don't even know. He just said it had a broken solenoid.
Like I said, I don't know the first thing about winches.
But I may just have to hold off and find one in working condition.

This is a picture of it. Don't know if that helps. It could be junk. I just don't know.

From the looks of that winch i would pass. It could just be the angle but it looks like one of the cross bars is bent, the one closest to the hooks on the front. Also he has a "jumble" of solenoids there but the housing is missing and that would mean you'd be needing a complete controller. What does the guy want for that winch in that condition?

The guy just wants it out of his shop. But it does look like it could be for nothin.
Could probably get it for like $60 or so. I think I'll take your advice and just pass.

Would it be rebuildable, though?
Or just a parts winch. It doesn't look that great, but if it's rebuildable for considerably less than a new one?????
Sorry, I really don't know much about winches. I can do electronics, so I'm sure that is helpful. I just don't know about winches.
Thanks bud.

If you can verfy that the motor is good, the castings aren't broken and that the thing will free spool then it would be a rebuildable unit for less than buying a new winch. You can always search on e-bay for a control unti with remote and a new cable.

EDIT: By the way, if someone had the cable wound on that winch and coming out the side with the hooks it was wound incorrectly.

THis is all from memory and my own experience. You could most likely find a supporting writeup on the innernetz.

you can test the motor by:

1. GROUNDING THE WINCH it wont work if you dont ground it,
2. hooking power to the one of the double poles- and, using a screwdriver, jump to the pole thats by itself. the drum should spin.
3. Hook power to the other double pole- and jump the single again. the drum will turn the other way.
IF the drum only spins in one direction, one set of brushes is toast. can be fixed rather cheaply.
If the drum doesnt spin in both directions, chances are the motor is junk. BUT, READ BELOW!!

Warns are also known for a issue with grounding. the finned aluminum end cap is prone to corrosion, and the two bolts that go through it are what the winch motor grounds with. it is simply fixed by pulling that off, cleaning the back of the cover, and installing two lock washers between the cap and the motor, on the bolts.

THe XD(k is IMO the best winch warn made, aside from the integrated solenoid XD9k.

A new motor would run about 350 bucks, so if it bad, then forget it. HOWEVER, if it is a good motor, anything under 300 is a good deal. the XD's sell for 600+ in good working condition....

Thanks. I'm gonna get with the guy and attempt to test it out.
He says he hasn't tested the motor but would be more than happy for us to test it out.
He said he would take $50 for it...

Gonna go here in about an hour and check it out. He's not home and hasn't tested it, but he says the clutch lever on the end still moves in and out of gear. The Solenoid pack has obviously been damaged.
Is there anything else in particular I should look out for. But I guess, for $50, it wouldn't be to big of a loss... Hopefully the motor isn't shot, but I guess I'll try and find out.
Thanks guys.

I went ahead and grabbed it. I figured, if anything, I'll just be out 50 bucks.
I took it apart and took some pics of the worst looking angles. This thing definitely had water sitting in it. So, you guys would know better than me...
Could this thing be worth saving?
The housing is in good shape. No cracks on the mounting points or anything.

That rust could be bead blasted out of there but what about the armature?

EDIT: Just missed your posting while i was typing.

Looks fixable with a little elbow grease.

Yeah, it's pretty beat up, but it's just a housing and all the mounting areas are good.

The guy said someone he knew had it on an International. The guy I got it from said it's been sitting in his shop forever and he was just cleanin shop trying to get rid of some stuff. So I guess I'll see what I can do with it...

call Warn, buy a full rebuild kit, and rent some time with a blast cabinet....
