My wife and I are buying a new (old) log house that comes with a 60x90 warehouse with 12' ceilings. I was thinking of buying a $10,000 outdoor wood boiler, as discussed in a previous thread. As we discussed our budget last nite, she asked where the wood would come from... Good question!!!

We have several hundred acres of woodlots in the northern Adirondacks... But does the wood magically appears cut split and dried, she asks???

Hmmm... she asks... what about the waste oil furnace I bought 15 years ago? Would that heat the warehouse??? And could we pipe the house from that??? She doesn't much like my hobby, or encourage it, but at least she was thinking about were I'd be working...

Anyhow, the waste oil furnace I have is a very small unit that requires a constant watchful eye, as the oil drips faster as the shop warms up. And it's hot air only...

Sooooooo.... What about a BIG new fully self contained waste oil unit to heat the shop, and pipe the hot water, via very $$$ underground PE

?) to the house??? She asks???

The house is about 1200 SqFt, 1 story, well built machined logs with nice modern windows. Also a full basement... Currently heated with Oil hot water/baseboard with an adjacent wood boiler. We have no interest to lug logs indoors, so it'll sit idle...

We budgeted $10,000 for the new heat unit. The contractor is across the street for the underground pipes, and I'll do all the plumbing, electric, and oil tank installation for storage. I'm thinking to have 3 or 4 - 275 gallon tanks to collect oil.

I aslo have some 3/4 PEX that I think is an upgrade. Maybe Barrier? I'll post pix of it. I bought 500' of it from a bankruptcy sale. Is the two layer PEX what's needed for underfloor heat?

I'll post a few links Google thought I'd like.

I'm sure you know much more than I about em, but i will say this....

years ago i worked at a marina that bought one of the cheaper "pan burn" style ones... they freakin suck.... waaaaay too much upkeep.... they eventually went to a fancier, pricier standard furnace style one with filters, jets, etc, that worked very well...

no help, thats just my experience with em...

also look into the high efficiency wood burning boilers. I am going to use one in colorado. They seem to be popular in the area that I am moving. They are a little different than the standard wood boilers. Supposedly, you can load it and leave it for 8 or more hours.

Oh man. I wish I had your problem. A 60*90 warehouse!!! I have a little one car garage with a short ceiling and a big cement slab in the back yard. Since I live in So Cal I have an old heat pump unit on my garage to add a little heat to the cool 40 degree winter days and a little cool to the 100+ summer days.

I'm interested in seeing what solution you come up with. Ill just pretend that it's my warehouse your talking about. :D

Oh man 5400 sq ft!?!? What's zee doktor gonna do with all that room! JUNK! :D

I've only ever used waste oil burners in shop areas, never was crazy about the idea of that air being piped into a house but I'm sure modern units aren't nearly as filthy as the one I use here.

I would do the wood heater if you have the wood you can always buy a log spliter, and have lots of kids to do the work :waytogo:

The waste oil ones smell and would work well for your shop but how much waste oil do you reallt have? If your changing semi truck oil alot then it would probably be enough but a couple of cars every once and awhile and you will run out real fast.

Well, DrkZide, it's been a LONG hard slog to get to a 60x90 shop, but I'll be attempting to rent half of it to take advantage of writing off 1/2 of out tax bill. That's the income tax law, and I've had a duplex we've live in for 18 years, x $1,200 a month, minus 1/2 my gross fixed expenses. A good deal if you can put up w tenants!

The waste oil boiler will go in the shop. I spoke with the REZNOR rep today, and they sell two units, and I'm sized for a 350,000 BTU unit. It weighs 1000 lbs, and costs $10,400. The 500,000 unit costs $14,000. I will use it to heat my driveway as well, depending on how much we decide/have to tear up.

This dream should happen, but until we buy the boiler, it's just alot of talk. We should close on the house in a week or two, the money's in the bank, as well we're prolly gonna put on a 10x14 extension on the front of the house rite away to have a proper basement entry, not Bilco doors beside the front door, which currently is a sliding patio door.
I'll talk to the Heatmore guy this week... BTW, the special underground double pipe insulated (piping) to get the heated (anti-freeze) to the house, about 100 feet, is $15 a foot. I'll post pix of the hose soon. So $1500 for the piping, plus a Metalbestos chimney? Sounds $$$!!!
